Greg Maddux - One strikeout away from 3,000

My all-time favorite pitcher, even if he becomes a Dodger someday, will be the second player this year to reach a milestone where the stat is 3,000. I'm watching on FSN Bay Area, but whenever there are two strikes I'm changing it to WGN so I can hear how the Cubs announcers will applaud him (of course, with these new announcers I don't know what to expect).

He will become the ninth pitcher in Major League history to record 300 career wins and have 3,000 career strikeouts, and if he gets it tonight, according to my research, he will be the only one of the nine to have both milestones reached against the same team.

    Anyone else watching?

I was going to start a thread on this...

      Way to go, Greg!

Absolutely my favorite pitcher, and a guy I think has been somewhat underappreciated over his career. I'd take him at his best (mid 90's) over anybody.

Congrats to the amazing Greg Maddux. His ERA is inflated by a couple of bad starts, but I can tell you by watching alot of his starts that he can still pitch. And he does this by not toping 85mph in some starts. Also he joins Fergie as the only pitchers EVER with 3000k's and less than 1000 BB's. He has a good cushion too so he should keep under 1000.

I believe the Cubs PA announcer said that Maddux was the only one. Oh well.

Re: Greg Maddux - One strikeout away from 3,000

Baseball Tonight just showed that Maddux has the best K:BB ratio of all the pitchers with over 3000 K's. Impressive when the list includes strikeout pitchers like Clemens and RJ. Just goes to show how good Maddux's control is.

EDIT - Coincidentally this was my 3000th post.

Out of luck I happened to flip to WGN just in time to see the K.

What an awesome pitcher. What this guy has done throughout his career is truly incredible. 300 wins, 3000 strikeouts, 900 walks, and a 2.99 career ERA, all right in the heart of the juiced ball era. Amazing.

And camulos, that's kind of freaky.

I know they showed the graphic later of it, and also it has floated around the local media here since he has gotten closer.

Ferguson Jenkins just barely made it:
                  K: 3192
                  BB: 997

                  Maddux:
                  K: 3001
                  BB: 894

2 GREAT control pitchers of their time.

yeah, he might be underrated a bit, not everyone would mention him if you ask them about the top pitchers of that era, he's more of a quiet guy so easier to forget

Oh Camulos, how many walks did you throw during your quest to 3000 posts?

Maddux I think is underrated because he doesn't have the 15+ strikeout performances that guys like Clemens, Pedro and RJ did. His 94 and 95 seasons still rank up there as two of the best seasons ever by a pitcher.
