What was the worst record ever for a first place (in division) team?

I'm asking this because the Padres are at 51 - 51 (.500), and they are on the verge of being in first place in the National League West with a winning percentage under .500. I am actually shamed to say that the Giants would still be 6.0 games back of them, but I guess that means they MAY still have a shot at contention.

Does anybody have this stat on record (no pun intended) anywhere?
    Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60

I know Texas in the 94 strike-shorten season OFFICALLY won the division with a 52-62 record. I'm not sure if that counts or not.

Now in a full 162 game season the Houston Astros in 1997 won 84 games to win their division by 5 games! That must have been one WEAK NL Central that year.

Yes it was. The Pirates actually had a fighting chance until the last week of the season. They played HOU that last week and got swept I believe.

The 1973 New York Mets won the N.L. East with a 82-79 record.

I remember that season. The Pirates were in contention till the end with a payroll of like 12 million dollars. They were literally paying guys with peanuts.
