Randy Winn Traded to the Giants

Jayson Stark reports Randy Winn has been traded to the Giants for Jesse Foppert and Yorvit Torrealba.

Good move by the Mariners.

Cuz he is injury prone and he wasnt coming around like we hoped he had. We expected him to be Major League material 2 years ago and well its 2 years later and NOTHING. I think its a good trade for both teams. The M's are getting a great backup in Yorvit, he can start. And Jesse is decent enought o be a 5th starter or LRP. Winn should be good in the outfield. He can play every position and is a lefty also.

The thing is, Foppert showed he WAS indeed major league material 2 years ago. He had the ability to strike people out and on a regular basis (101K/110IP). The injury to his arm which caused surgery set him back and he hasn't completely recovered from it. He has the makings of a top of the line rotation kind of guy in my eyes

Ok, here is my breakdown and why it doesn't make much sense..

Randy Winn: .275 6HR 37RBI 12SB .342OBP .267RISP [386AB]

Michael Tucker: .260 5HR 32RBI 4SB .338OBP .339RISP [208AB]

Winn batted behind Ichiro and had plenty of RBI opportunities while Tucker often came in as a PH or was mixed in the lineup somewhere. So why do the trade? Why give up a pitching prospect that has shown he can handle the bigs and a backup catcher? Tucker bats left and Winn bats switch. Both have experience in all areas of the outfield. Call me crazy, but this looks like management trying to make the fans think we are actually making a push at the postseason and Winn is going to carry them there. I guess this also means that Grissom, who was 2nd in RBI/HR behind Bonds last season, is done.
