The Case for 2 former Expos...

What does everyone think of the prospects of Andre Dawson and Timmy Raines entering the Hall of Fame.

Raines has very comparables numbers to Lou Brock of the cards who is a HOF'er. He had more power, better on-base numbers, better ops number career wise and while he didn't steal as many bases as Lou, his percentage of stolen bases was much better.

    Raines: .294/.385/.425
    Brock: .293/.343 /.410

The problem that Timmy might encounter was that the 'Spos didn't play in many playoff games, in fact, they only played in 1 so that may somewhat hurt his chances. But I think and hope he gets in.

Dawson has sexy numbers. Close to 450 Homeruns, hit a solid .277 for his career, has over 2770 hits in his career, but his on-base numbers were preety bad. The numerous gold gloves will definatly boost his chances though.

Here's his number compared to Dave Winfield.
    Dawson.279 .323 .482
    Winfield .283 .353 .475

I think he's out. If he walked more than 70 a season, he'd be a lock, but his OBP numbers are just too low.

    Thoughts?

Dawson should definitely be in, IMO. Aside from OBP, which I don't think most voters look much at anyway, his numbers are strong. Good average, great power, lots of RBI's. He also stole some bases and was a very good outfielder for most of his career.

I think Tim Raines is borderline. He was better than most people might realize, but I dunno... he probably falls into the category of a very good player who just wasn't quite a HOF'er.

They are both Hall of Famers if you ask me especially if you don't consider the juiced up stats of the last 10 or so years.

It's tough to make an offensive comparison between Brock and Raines. Brock played half of his career during a time when the pitching mound was 6" higher than it is today. That gave pitchers an overwhelming edge on the hitters.

Brock also retired as the leader of two major records (career stolen bases and single season stolen bases). That definitely had a part in him being elected.

I think Raines does have the numbers and career accomplishments to make it into the Hall. He was Rickey Henderson's NL counterpart that defined what a lead-off hitter was throughout the 80's.

Dawson is very tough. Again, it is hard to compare him to Winfield when he eclipsed the magical 3,000 hit plateau. That only automatically stamps your ticket for election.

Dawson's career is more closely related to Dale Murphy's and I doubt Murphy will ever get in (unless it is by the Veteran's Committee).
