But seriously... We always hear this crap about how Scott Brosius was a true Yankee. Paul O'neill was a true Yankee. David Cone was a true Yankee.

          WTF is a true Yankee?

The annoying this is that I know Yankee fans who actually think like that.

                  Re: "True Yankees"

Who the hell let Jay Mohr start writing articles? The idea of the article is okay, but the actual writing is horrible.

And for those who are asking about a "True Yankee", we consider players who aren't top-of-the-line superstars, aren't flashy, don't have huge ego's and most importantly they put the team first. They're also quality human beings, good in the clubhouse and not total jackasses (besides Wells basically). They're clutch, and calm under pressure. They respect the game and play it hard.

I mean out of their dynasty of the late 90's, Jeter and Rivera are the only two who are going to the Hall of Fame that have all four rings. The '98 Yanks are considered to be one of the Top 3 teams of all time and they didn't have superstars popping out of every position like they do now. But they had plenty of above-average players like O'Neill, Bernie and Tino. Now it's Sheffield, A-Rod and Giambi. Yet the '98 team was a million times better than this year's.

This is why A-Rod won't be a "true Yankee". He's got a huge ego, hasn't done anything too clutch yet, hasn't won anything yet, had the blitch-slapping incident in the ALCS, etc.

And lastly, to the posters saying Yankee fans are the only people who try and judge "true Yankees", remember that plenty of Red Sox players were ripping A-Rod and other new aquisitions, saying they weren't true Yankees. It's not just Yankee fans who think that way.

                          Re: "True Yankees"

Ehh hit the nail right on the head. True Yankees... while the term is used way too much... are just guys who played to win the game... and were team guys first. They went all out.... never said a word... and were guys that could perform as a tigh knit group.

I will love the Yankees as long as I live... but my love for them doesn't blind me from the fact that 90% of our roster are guys who would've been forced out of the clubhouse in '98 because they didn't fit the Yankee mold. Unfortuantely, the team has changed its ways a lot... and this is what we are stuck with. When we star to build from within... which is what we are starting to do now... the rookies will be taught the Yankee way from veterans who were there when the team was a real team.

                            .
So I guess Reggie Jackson isn't a true Yankee then?

The basic idea of the article makes sense but it's kinda hard to just pinpoint who are "true Yankees". My definition of a true Yankee is someone who becomes a fan favourite by the way they play on the field and longevity. There isn't a single ideology for Yankee greatness. The Yanks have won in many ways during their illustrious history.

They've won with the Murderer's Row club along with great pitching, The Bronx Bombers dominated with hitting, timely defense and great pitching. The Bronx Zoo years were associated with brash players who couldn't get along with each other but who always seemed to excell on the field. Finally the last Yankee dynasty was marked by a team concept with a lot of average players who came through in the clutch. Sadly a lot of baseball people are myopic when it comes to that and they suddenly think that that's the way the Yanks always were.

The club has never had any kind of ideological base til then. Now if you were to talk about the Oriole way, the Royals way and the Blue Jay Way you'd know exactly what that means because those teams practiced an ideology and had a concept of what they wanted for a very long time. In one case the ideology was so ingrained up til the late 90s and was THE core way the team was run. (if you don't know what team i'm talking about it's the Blue Jays)

I think you can file the entire 'true yankee' notion under the 'complete and utter bag of dog****e' file.

Has anybody else noticed that whenever a Yankee fan begins speaking about this 'true yankee' nonsense, he almost immediately appears like the most arrogant person you've ever seen? I can almost picture a Shooter McGavin type saying this tripe.

Honestly, I've never come across such a bullcrap concept in my entire life. It's simply another way for Yankee fans to feel as if they're superior to others. We get the point - you've won a truckload of championships. You've been pretty damn good. There's no need to make yourselves look pompous while celebrating your success.
