    The Raffy Saga Goes On

Report: O's Might Not Want Palmeiro Back

    <table class="bdy" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="770"> <tbody><tr valign="top"><td width="10">
</td> <td width="440"> <!-- search:</noindex> --> The Baltimore Orioles have not contacted veteran first baseman Rafael Palmeiro about his return from a 10-day suspension following a positive steroid test. And it is beginning to become clear that some in the organization would rather he not come back at all, according to a report in The Washington Post.
    <table class="emailBoothFields" style="border: 1px solid rgb(179, 179, 179); background-color: rgb(238, 238, 238);" align="right" border="0" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" width="245"> <tbody><tr> <td> Also...

    <li>Dibble: Palmeiro's cred is gone
    <li>Behrendt: Palmeiro playing dumb

    <li>Palmeiro's, Orioles' statements

</td> </tr> </tbody></table>Palmeiro is eligible to play again Thursday in Baltimore, where the Orioles will host the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. And the agent for Palmeiro, Arn Tellem, apparently told The Post on Sunday that his client plans on returning.

But others reportedly don't quite understand why Palmeiro would do that.

"I don't see how he can be that dumb to return," one source close to the Orioles said. "I will guess that he's going to get resounding boos, and that's in Baltimore, a city you could call civil. I don't think he'll get a good reception at Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park. I don't see how he's going to play at Yankee Stadium."

Orioles owner Peter Angelos and vice president of baseball operations Mike Flanagan did not return The Post's phone calls seeking comments about Palmeiro.

"We're not going to comment at all," Orioles executive vice president for baseball operations Jim Beattie said.

The Orioles are 11 games behind the Red Sox in the American League East, and appear out of the playoff race. The team fired manager Lee Mazzilli last week.

Palmeiro, who is hitting .280 with 18 home runs, probably won't be brought back next season. So, the Orioles might opt to call up first baseman Walter Young, who is hitting .289 with 12 homers at Triple-A Ottawa.

But if B.J. Surhoff lands on the disabled list with a strained left groin, the Orioles just might be forced to stick with Palmeiro a bit longer.

The club has yet to make a decision about Surhoff.

Tellem, meanwhile, did not respond to an e-mail request for comment about Palmeiro's plans. But Palmeiro is expected to address the media either Wednesday or Thursday for the first time since giving a statement on Aug. 1 after his positive drug test results were announced.

How could fans at Yankee Stadium boo Palmeiro and yet cheer for Giambi?

At any rate, I think the Orioles would be sending a strong message from their ownership if they designated Palmeiro for assignment. I encourage them to do so.

The way he handled the situation with congress, then him coming out and saying I dont know how it got in my system BS, then we find out the only practicl way this strong of a roid gets in your system is through injection made him look like the biggest farce I've ever seen. I'd applaud the O's, now if things were different and he didnt come off as better than Jose, Mac, Barry and the rest, nochip on his shoulder, never admitted or denied anything... I would think he should come back, but he didnt.

While we all may believe Giambi used a banned substance, he's never tested positive. Rafael Palmeiro did.

He only admitted he did after being subpoenaed to testify in front of a federal grand jury, and risk perjury if he lied. Both did it, why argue semantics?

I suppose you can argue that it is not fair that the sealed testimony was leaked to the public (holding their flaming pitchforks), but that's not really germane to this particular argument.

*Edit after reading above words that I posted: I probably seem like your token Red Sox fan trying to piss on Giambi or whatever, but I really have no interest in such a thing. The folks who seem to be consumed with proving how Giambi is currently using simply because he is a Yankee are clearly biased. Ironically for me, I have a slight bias in Giambi's FAVOR given that he's provided my roto league team a kick in the *** over the last month..

FINALLY they consider calling Big Walter up. He is a sick man, can't wait to see him in B-More if this is true!

Will Raffy, Bonds, Sosa, Balco and this entire Era please just go fall into a hole and never be heard from again?

I'm just getting sick of it all. All the speculation, all the drama. I'm sick of it.

When I see Travis Hafner, a player I really like watching, hit a homerun, I don't want to sit there and wonder.

              That feels better.

Well, because they're Yankee fans. They appreciate that whole fallen angel revival type of season that he's having, steroids or not.
