</td> <td width="440"> <!-- search:</noindex> --> The Baltimore Orioles have not contacted veteran first baseman Rafael Palmeiro about his return from a 10-day suspension following a positive steroid test. And it is beginning to become clear that some in the organization would rather he not come back at all, according to a report in The Washington Post.

But others reportedly don't quite understand why Palmeiro would do that.
"I don't see how he can be that dumb to return," one source close to the Orioles said. "I will guess that he's going to get resounding boos, and that's in Baltimore, a city you could call civil. I don't think he'll get a good reception at Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park. I don't see how he's going to play at Yankee Stadium."
Orioles owner Peter Angelos and vice president of baseball operations Mike Flanagan did not return The Post's phone calls seeking comments about Palmeiro.
"We're not going to comment at all," Orioles executive vice president for baseball operations Jim Beattie said.
The Orioles are 11 games behind the Red Sox in the American League East, and appear out of the playoff race. The team fired manager Lee Mazzilli last week.
Palmeiro, who is hitting .280 with 18 home runs, probably won't be brought back next season. So, the Orioles might opt to call up first baseman Walter Young, who is hitting .289 with 12 homers at Triple-A Ottawa.
But if B.J. Surhoff lands on the disabled list with a strained left groin, the Orioles just might be forced to stick with Palmeiro a bit longer.
The club has yet to make a decision about Surhoff.
Tellem, meanwhile, did not respond to an e-mail request for comment about Palmeiro's plans. But Palmeiro is expected to address the media either Wednesday or Thursday for the first time since giving a statement on Aug. 1 after his positive drug test results were announced.
