If the Yankees don't get some of those relief pitchers, and dump Embree and Proctor, I'm going to scream.

I understand how the waiver wire works(thanks to All Star Baseball 2005), but I don't understand why they have untouchables on there.

Did the Astros just lowered Clemens' value? The morons actually tested his value using the waivers. .and Andy Pettitte, too?...on second thought wow.

The Astros did not lower either pitchers value because the had no intention of trading them also, because they knew no one would claim them. Any team claiming them would have to assume every penny of their contracts, thats why so many big name players pass thru waivers this time of year without being claimed. If anything, the Astros were just dangling bait to see who would bite.

they didn't even need to test it like that..but now they're finally convinced teams will take the entire contracts..

Re: Huge List of Waived Players

Teams who are interested in making moves typically put everybody on waivers. If they were only placing the guys they want to move on waivers, it tips their hand and would allow other teams to block the request.

Everyone gets claimed...then the teams just pull them back or make an awkward trade offer. When the Jays claimed a backup catcher from somewhere (forget where) the team wanted Dustin McGowan for him, so the Jays just laughed for a while...

Re: Huge List of Waived Players

In the last 13 years only 3 major waiver trades come to mind:

David Cone to Toronto for Jeff Kent and Ryan Thompson

Woody Williams to the Cardinals for Ray Lankford

                          and
Larry Walker to the Cardinals for Jason Burch, Luis Martinez and Chris Narveson

Other than that it is usually minor deals done thru waivers so having so many star players clearing waivers is nothing more than a pointless exercise teams do at this time of year.

On an interesting note, according to Peter Gammons Kaz Matsui, who the Mets would like to get rid of, was claimed by another team and the Mets pulled him back. It makes you wonder who put in the claim and what they were offering in return.

I had heard a while back that the Giants were interested in him, and were throwing Durham out in return. I have no idea whether this was the case this time though.
