    Jayson Stark's article on speed

    Anyone see this?

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/column...=2137637&num=0

Pretty interesting read. Among the highlights are the fact that Willy Taveras can run a 3.56 down to first base on a bunt (batting RH!) and that Joey Gathright was originally spotted by Tampa scouts while jumping over a car in a parking lot.

Obviously, the article concentrates on guys who are fast but don't really have well-rounded games. Pierre and Crawford can do some things besides run, but not many. But it made me think about fast guys throughout baseball history who actually had other components to their game besides speed. Mays and the pre-steroid Barry Bonds are probably the best examples, but Rickey Henderson and Joe Morgan are two guys who come to mind as well.

It's also interesting to note that among the "medal winners" that Stark listed, only two of those guys have OBPs above .320. What a waste....
    Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.
Dash: [muttering] Which is another way of saying no one is.

Without their speed... most of those .320 OBP guys would only be dreaming of getting drafted,
