Bobby Jenks: Last Night, Three Pitches; 100MPH+

Last night I had my second chance to see Chisox reliever Bobby Jenks pitch this season. And last night, he left the crowd in Seattle, the Seattle broadcasters and my behind in awe.

He entered the game in the bottom of the 8th with two out. The first batter he had to face was the Mariners' Richie Sexton.

In Sexton's at bat, he threw three fastballs (all 4-seamers) to Sexton. In this order, the speeds were: 100MPH, 102MPH (WTF?!?-lol) and 101MPH. He also threw two sliders: 89MPH and 90-MPH. The Mariners' announcers spoke in disbelief. Shyt, I looked on the tube in disbelief. Of course, the speeds were posted in the stadium on the auxilary scoreboard.

Sexton got an opposite field double off of the 101MPH fastball. The ball went on the fly down the right field corner. He got one RBI, and almost had two, but Ichiro...who was on first...was thrown out at the plate 9-4-2...Dye-Iguchi-Torrealba.

Wow...The Chisox surely have an arm on their staff that can at LEAST throw as hard as the Mariners' King Felix. I'd read about Jenks' fastball before, but this was the first time out of the two times total I'd seen him, that I saw him crank it up 100MPH+.

    peace!

100+ mph fastballs is impressive but major league players will catch up to them. Hopefully he can pitch and not just throw hard.

he can pitch, not unhittable, but damn good for a guy that was waived

you're right....I know he got himself into a TON of trouble and off field issues while he was in the Angels' minor league system. His stats from last year...yikes! The guy was ALL OVER THE PLACE!

yup ive seen a majority of the sox games this year and he can definitely pitch, he has great control on his curveball for a guy with a (usually) high-90s fastball, ive seen him use it very effectively (the extra inning game against kc where he pitched 3 innings comes to mind)

                  Re: Bobby Jenks: @ Bears_16_and 0

Excluding time missed in 2003 and 2004 due to his ongoing elbow stress fractures (he's currently pitching with an screw in his right elbow):

                  In 2002:

He was suspended in the 2002 season for violating team rules. A short time after, he was the subject of a revealing ESPN Magazine article which exposed a few troubling incidents from his past. I never read it, but I should see if I can get a copy.

                  In 2004:

While rehabbing in Mesa, Az. for his third stress reaction in his right elbow, he was involved in a fight with a teammate. He was suspended and sent home.

I guess the Angels organization was so disenchanted with him, that when they needed to make room on their 40-man roster for Cuban refugee Kendry Morales, they designated Jenks for assignment. They lost him on waivers to the Chisox.

                  peace!

Yeah, but the thing is, the fastball isn't felix's only pitch. All his pitches are absolutely wicked. I think he's got a shot at being an all-star next year.

Um, the fastball isn't Bobby's only pitch. He has the best curveball on our team, too.
