What is with all of these trades?

Correct me if im wrong but wasn't the trade deadline July 31st for Major League Baseball? If that's the case then how in the world are teams still trading players going into september? I was browsing MLB.com and a few trades took place yesterday like the Braves acquiring Todd Hollandsworth for 2 minor league pitchers.

Players can still be traded from July 31st to Aug 31st as long as they clear waivers first.

I honestly dont remember an eventful post-deadline like this though. I mean Griffey seemed on the brink of being traded after the deadline, Lawton was dealt which may be the biggest trade of the year when it is all over, the Soc got a quality arm in Harville. It is kinda stange.

I think most years it's fairly common to have alot of waiver trades in August. Most are just very small, minute trades. It's just the Yanks got two bigger names in Lawton and Chacon which usually doesn't happen.

Yep. There are a lot of small trades that happen, but rarely do you see the bigger named players go. I think the only reason Lawton went through is that he's pretty expensive for what he brings to the table (decent bat, good OBP, terrible fielding, terrible baserunning).

We got Chacon before July 31st.

It has been like this the last few yrs. I think the initial trade deadline should be extended to aug. 31st and do away with the waiver trades. I doubt that happens but it would end this kind of confusion for some fans.

Add Belhorn to that list, minus Chacon

I can't believe so many people are acting like Matt Lawton's a big name.

Matt Lawton has averaged 17HR's 75+ RBI's and a .270 AVG which is pretty good for a guy with 10 years under his belt...

He may not be a big name, but the guy produces and youi cant ask much more then that, and I'm sure any avid baseball fan would know the guy by name and team...

The Cards got Larry Walker around this time last yr. I think that was a bigger move than the Lawton one.
