Delmon Young...Is He Right or Wrong?

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay prospect Delmon Young is unhappy about not being called up from the minor leagues this season and said Monday the Devil Rays were reluctant to promote him because the organization is cheap.

The 19-year-old brother of Detroit's Dmitri Young was selected Baseball America's Minor League Player of the Year after splitting time this season between Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham.

Asked why he felt he was not called up, Young replied: "The only thing I can think of is they're being cheap."

"When it comes to free agency, no use trying to stay around there for the long haul," he said. "Get your six years and leave."....

"I put up great numbers, better than a lot of players who got called up around the majors. A lot of them were on contending teams," Young said. "Tampa's going nowhere this year, so they could at least call up the guys who are going to be there in the future."

Personally, a 19 year old kid has NO RIGHT to complain, whether or not he won Minor League POY. Yeah, Tampa Bay has nothing to lose, but frankly...they have nothing to gain either. Thats the last thing he needs to be doing is opening his mouth.

Yeesh. Yeah, that sort of sounds sketchy to me. IMO, as impatient as I would be, I would certainly wait my turn.

Or, I would possibly pull a Dennis Quaid in The Rookie, where he threatens that he would leave the organization to spend time with his family if he doesn't get called up. While you may not get it your way, I don't see what else he would do.

Of course, he was an older guy. This guy is 19. I understand his reasonings, but no need to complain. Furthermore, no need to call them cheap.

I heard something about Francoeur a few weeks back about his contract that made me like him just a little less than I do now, but I still love the guy I guess.

The D'Rays would be cheap, though. They have nothing to lose... they're not going to make the playoffs, and their team, while young (look at Delmon Young, for example), does have some holes that other teams are exploiting. Give the kid a chance. At least call him up.

Regardless, what he said was wrong.

      He's wrong.

Why should he get called up and start? How is that fair to the starting outfielders who have been with the team all year? You're going to bench Jonny Gomes, or Joey Gathwright, or Carl Crawford, or Aubery Huff etc. for this 19 year old snot? That's pretty much a slap in the face to them, they've paid their dues...Let Young pay his.

This somewhat offends me as a baseball fan. Look at Rick Short's situation, then tell me Young is right.
