Hampton to Marlins, or is he???

Charles Johnson has waived his no-trade thingy so that allows a trade b/n the Rockies and Marlins that will send Juan Pierre and Hampton to the Marlins for Preston Wilson, Charles Johnson, and two other guys....

Catcher Charles Johnson reversed his decision and approved a trade to the Colorado Rockies, his agent said Saturday, clearing the way for a six-player deal that would send left-hander Mike Hampton to the Marlins.

Since this article, the rumor about Hampton going to the Braves has gotten stronger and I guess its all but done.

I like the deal, Hampton is an excellent pitcher, but Coors got him down (yes, I know his road ERA sucked too).....He's a good replacement for Glavine, although I wish we got Petitte instead

This is crazy... hadn't heard a thing about it until you posted this thread.

I like the deal, but I hate giving up Spooney. I guess that pretty much guarantees that Smoltz will stay the closer since Spooney was the next best option. Now all they need to do is sign Maddux to a 3 year deal and the team is set. Maddux, Millwood, Hampton, Moss, Marquis... I'll take that starting 5.

Word is also that they are going after Cabrera, the guy who hit 55 homers this year in Japan. That would solve some major 1B problems.

Rebuilding isn't sounding all that bad suddenly. Go Braves!

Just contract the Marlins already. It doesn't take a genius to see these 2 moves were done to cut payroll. They gave up 2 good players in Charles Johnson and Preston Wilson to get Hampton and then they turn around and practically give him to the Braves. Just contract them and be done with it. Contract the Expos and Devil Rays too.

Wow..Not sure what to think about this deal. It's risky, but with potential for huge benefits if Hampton can get back to his pre-Colorado self. It's the end of an era..As much as I was mad at Glavine for his performance this postseason and his unwillingness to work with the Braves, I'll miss him. It just seems like he should have finished his career with Atlanta. I sure hope they resign Maddux.

Glavine is gone, but I'm pretty sure we'll sign Maddux..

I wish we could've traded for Javier Vazquez since he was rumored to be on the block, but Hampton is a good pickup and a nice replacement for Glavine.

If Leo can knock some sense into him, and he returns to his old self, we wont ever look back.

Giving up Spooney was hard, besides his pitching, his name was DAMN fun to say....sucks how he's not a Brave any longer.

We need a first baseman, hopefully the Cabrera guy works out, I dont know much about him. How old is he?

Re: Hampton to Marlins, or is he???

I agree about Maddux, but I'm kind of fed up with Glavine. He's a good pitcher, no doubt about it, but I really think it's time to move in a new direction.

Hampton should have been a Brave a couple of years ago, but the front office decided that he needed to go to them instead of the other way around... he was upset by that and looked elsewhere, while the GM of the Braves tried kissin' ***... a little too late. Now the situation is rectified, and Hampton is a Brave... life is good. And look at the deal the Braves are getting on him. 6 years and all they have to pay is $30 million. That rocks! Nothing like having Florida and Colorado pay for your starting pitching. That could free up some Jeff Kent money, or maybe enough to sign Lockhart, Julio Franco, and Albie Lopez again! Woo hoo!

Forget about his last 2 seasons... in the hands of a happy, richer Mazzone, he'll be back to his old self in no time. He's happy to be a Brave, which helps alot. He and his wife were partying at the news of the trade... big difference when they want to be there vs. when they don't.

Could be a solid rotation next season... can't wait to see.

I think that Cabrera guy is in his early 30's. From what I've read, he used to play on the Royals? Not sure, but he had some problems and went to Japan, but now he claims he's a new man and wants to be given the opportunity to play in the majors again.

Hopefully it works out.....I dont want Glavine to go to a division rival though cuz then I'd have root against him and I love the guy.....let him go to the AL....

Re: Hampton to Marlins, or is he???

Yeah, that's gonna be tough, 'specially if he goes to the Mets. I hate the Mets, like every good, upstanding Braves fan should. The Phillies and he are a good fit, so he can mentor their young pitching staff (in my opinion, they are going to win the division next season if they get Glavine). Hell, I'd rather he go to the Yankees than the Mets.

I can guarantee you that the Braves will be looking to add more than just Hampton and Maddux this off-season. The winds of change are blowing in Atlanta, and they need to figure out what piece is missing before all the fans give up. They raised ticket prices again this season, so if they don't put an exciting product on the field, they are going have one empty Ted.

Look for them to go after Kent possibly, along with a first baseman and maybe even Mike Stanton if they can't re-sign Remlinger. Stanton was a Brave a while ago, and rumor has it that he wants to come back... great set-up man for Smoltz.

Anyone but the Mets man, anyone but the Mets....

I'm sick of an outstanding season year after year only to fail in the postseason, this year NEEDS to be different. I thought this past one was OURS since the Yanks and DBacks got ousted.....we blew it once again.

We need a consistent bat at 1B and Olerud would be a great fit, although he doesnt provide as much power as we'd like...

I havent heard anything about Remlinger...

too bad they gave up Spooney. Smoltz is getting old and only has a few years left. I think Hampton will be better than Glavine though (if they don't sign Glavine). I think Glavine will be on the decline the next few years.

It's a shame too. From all accounts hampton wanted to come back to Houston. But of course the contract was a problem. The astros will never be a contender until the team is sold to a owner that wants to win, not just sell tickets.

No, but by the Braves signing a left hander, it looks like they are not going to pay Glavine what he wants.
