    Macha out in OAK

This was posted in the Pirates forum, but I thought I'd post it here as well. Macha has been linked to the Pirates managerial position in many Pittsburgh papers (he grew up in Pittsburgh), but so has Jim Tracy recently.

If the A's made the playoffs, he was my vote for Manager of the Year. He totally turned the A's around during the season. Sucks they couldn't agree on a deal. He was a great manager.

He's been the guy I've wanted to take over for the vacant Pirates position for a long time. Hopefully the friendship between the Pirates GM and Jim Tracy won't cloud his judgement in taking the best guy possible.

I've heard nothing but good things about Macha as a manager and your statements add to that.

I have a feeling Macha would rather go to Florida but if he likes a challenge then it would be very interesting to see how he manages that Pirates club.

I don't think the manager for a team like the A's matters a whole lot.

They didn't miss a beat when Howe left for NY and Macha stepped in. Most of the decisions of lineups/bullpen usage with the A's are made upstairs by the FO.

They were under .500 by more than 15 games at the All Star Break and brought them back over 15 over back into the playoff race. I think the manager has something to do with that.

The only positive is that Macha is from Pittsburgh and has wanted to move home closer to his family. Of course, FL is closer than OAK.

I think he fits the Pirates a lot better than Tracy. The Buc's are a young club with a lot of very good young talent. They need a nuturing manager and Macha seems to be that guy.

I honestly think the Pirates have a legit shot at being competitive in 2 years. This is the first time I've thought this in a long time. After watching the Pirates young guys this year - Duke, Maholm, Duffy, Eldred, McClouth and Doumit - there's a lot of hope. Funny that I don't include Bay or Perez in that list and Bay's 27 and Perez is 24?

I was looking over some of Bay's numbers at the end of the year and didn't even realize how good he had actually done. If you compare them to the MVP candidates, Bay is right there in most offensive categories.

Did you see the article in the PG and how it compared Bays numbers to Andruw Jones? Bays numbers stack up remarkably well.

No I didn't see that. Good article... My interest in the Pirates really dropped off towards the end of the season and I really wasn't paying as close of attention. When I went to the game last Saturday, they posted his stats on the scoreboard and my mouth dropped. He's been amazing.

Having Macha as a manager is nothing but a pipedream to a Cubs fan. I swear Dusty Baker has the staying power of a cockroach. Sometimes I wonder if its Dusty or his son managing the Cubs.

I bet you guys wind up with Sweet Lou managing the Marlins. That way he doesn't have to leave Florida... Almost seems like a perfect match.

Except Lou would find a way to screw up that pitching staff. If I were the Marlins I wouldn't go anywhere near him. The guy just doesn't work well with young pitchers.

Speculation is that the Pirates will have contact with Macha or his agent, Alan Nero, to gauge Macha's interest level in the Pirates' job, but that the Pirates remain locked on Tracy as their prime candidate.

"I live in Pittsburgh and it seems to be a fit," Macha told Bay Area reports in a conference call yesterday. "And I've won [in Oakland] with young kids."
                            Come to the 'burgh, Macha
