    ehhhh

    not really

Bobby Crosby missed a lot of time in the first half I believe. When he was in your lineup this year (can't remember the exact number) you guys performed extrememly better and probably would have stayed closer in the division/wild card had he not had to leave again with the fracture.

I wouldn't be begging for Ken Macha to be anyones manager the manager of the A's is pretty much a puppet of the front office. Billy Beane runs that team. You seen what happened to Art Howe the Mets thought they had a genious and all they really had was a puppet I bet that will be the same thing that happens to Ken Macha as well.

Could be some thruth to that. 3B Coach Ron Washington is rumored to be #1 on the Devil Rays list of possible managers while Bob Geren was rumored to be front runner for the A's. Washington seems to be highly regarded from what i have heard while i have heard nothing about Geren (other than that he was a backup Catcher for the Yankees and Padres from 1988-'93). So maybe all Beane is looking for is a figure head, not a manager.

Well today the A's surprised everyone and re-hired Macha up through the 2008 season.

That is weird. I've never heard of a situation where a team released a manager just to rehire him.

George Steinbrenner fired and re-hired Billy Martin like 3 times, but it is unusual.

Oh I know that I mean releasing the manager in one offseason then rehiring him in the same offseason is very weird I don't even think Steinbrenner did that with Billy Martin.

Not in the offseason, during the the 1978 season Billy Martin resigned in july only to be re-hired 5 days later. It sounds like after not getting the Pirates job Macha reconsidered the A's offer and decided to return rather than chance not getting a job at all next season.

                      Ah ok....

BTW do you know of any books that covers Martin's relationship with Steinbrenner and the Yankees?

That's what it sounds like to me as well. I doubt that Billy Beane re-thought his position and decided to offer the money that Macha was asking for.

Only one book comes to mind, it's called "The Last Yankee: the Turbulent life of Billy Martin". The book is more about Billy but it does touch on Martin and Steinbrenner's relationship.
