Anyone else sick of inflated playoff stats?

Last night they displayed a graphic showing how many post season saves Rivera had relative to guys who played pre wildcard. Does anyone else get tired of being presented with apples and oranges stats? Rivera is a good closer but these stats have little/no meaning with an added round for the wild card...plus in 1985 they went from 5 to 7 games for the NLCS/ALCS. Another one that gets kicked around along these lines is the # of wins the 1998 Yankees...they like to include the playoffs when citing this.

Its not a big deal. Networks put these on the screen to emphasize the point being made by the announcers. If you dont like their presentation of the stats... you dont have to agree with them. Its just done to give the announcers something to talk about.

Whether it be the graphic or the discussion...either way, its apples and oranges. Also, if they are looking for stuff to talk about why not take the extra step and point out that the stats are eschewed by a change in format.

Eh, it doesn't bother me that much. I put a mental demarcation line when it comes to those stats. I think of things pre-Wildcard and post-Wildcard. As for the LCS' don't remind me of that, in 1985 the Jays had a 3-1 lead over the KC Royals. If they had played that series just a year earlier the Jays would be in the world series.

I remember that. George Brett killed Doyle Alexander. That was vintage George Brett.

Yes. They are inflated BUT I wouldn't go as far as saying that they have no meaning. Playoff stats is what counts. Weather it's the first round or World Series EVERY GAME COUNTS. And the stats represents what a gamer is in baseball. If you look at the all-time playoff stats you would see a lot of recent Yankees on that list. And for good reason because in the last 10 years the Yankees have won 4 championships and been to the playoffs all 10 years. Rivera doesn't surprise me in him being the all-time playoff saves leader. What I didn't know until last night is that Bernie Williams is the all-time playoff home run leader!? But come to think about it, Bernie in his prime has had some clutch hits in his post season appearences.

Stats are stats...I dont really care with them up there. Personally the ones that piss me off are in the NFL when they say "Team A wins 90% of the time when they run the ball over X plays"...no ****, what do you do when youre already winning?? Run the ball!! Same thing in basketball "Team B has only two wins so far when theyve commited X more fouls than their opponents"...well when youre losing at the end anyway you foul a bunch.

Still any sports fan should be able to look beyond the numbers presented and find out whats really worthwhile
