Hopefully the Boss will let him do his own thing instead of telling him what to do and not do always.

Re: Brian Cashman to return as Yankees GM
I'm really surprised. Looking at the guy when he joined the Yankees and comparing it with now, it looks like he's aged a hell of a lot more than he really has. I figured he was sick of the Yankees but I guess money talks. Either that or Steinbrenner is going to step down soon or at least take a hands off approach to the team.Comment

Re: Brian Cashman to return as Yankees GM
Hmm.. is it me, or ever since Cashman took over the Yankees, have they started a downward spiral?
I mean this team, begining of the season, almost had no chance, and was being counted out. He has not only brought this team down, but hes only making it worst year after year after year.
The Yankees are like retirement homes for the old and almost retired baseball players. I think everybody that goes to the Yanks, either end their career there, or has their career ended.Comment

Well, he took over after 97, and the next year they were the best team I've ever seen, and they won 3 straight championships, and 5 AL Pennants.
Yep, downward spiral.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

I believe it was Cashman who had Vladdy lined up to be signed but then it was Steinbrenner who ordered him to get Sheffield instead because of his relationship with Doc Gooden.

I am still very pleased to have Cashman back and the moves he made were the reason of us to the playoffs and winning the division.Yankees

I know one thing...this better mean the Phillies sign Gerry Hunsicker right away. If not, then I'm killing somebody.Comment

Re: Brian Cashman to return as Yankees GM
Cashman works well within the complicated (read: screwy) decision-making system that is the Yankees front office. Not bringing him back would surely have been a mistake considering you're not going to be able to get another high-end GM to replace him because of how well known it is that the job comes with it a lot of politics and a lot of forced decisions.Comment

Yes, but he didn't build that team. That was Gene Michaels' work. Granted he got Brosius and Knoblauch (obviously two huge components to the three straight WS titles) the foundation of that team was already there. But you definately can't blame Cashman for their "struggles" over the last five years.
Things started going downhill after we lost in '01 and Cashman couldn't make his own decisions anymore. Steinbrenner and his cronnies had a temper tantrum and that's when the influx of Giambi/K. Brown type players started coming in. A complete revolving door of players like the late 80's. Look at all the guys who spent sucha short, unsuccessful stint in pinstripes.
- Jeff Weaver
- Raul Mondesi
- Robin Ventura
- Aaron Boone
- David Wells (again)
- Tony Clark
- Kenny Lofton
- Miguel Cairo
- John Olerud
- Jose Contreras
- Paul Quantrill
- Felix Rodriguez
Not to mention
- Kevin Brown
- Jaret Wright
- Carl Pavano
- Randy Johnson
Will be added to this list in the next few years.
Almost all those guys were an All-Star at one point or another in their career but by the time they came to the Yankees they were either washed up or couldn't handle the pressure. None of them fit in with the Yankee system (or lack there of).
Hopefully Steinbrenner and the Tampa idiots will lay off Cashman and him do his job. I think we'll be fine if that happens."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier
