Official AJ Burnett Free Agent thread...
His first stop is in Toronto.
I hope we can sign him at a reasonable price. Reasonable would be 4 years at 40 million. But, I didn't like reading this...
Financial details cannot be discussed yet, but some late-September predictions of what Burnett could receive on a new contract were as high as $65 million over five years.Tags: None -

I hope some team pays him that much and he ends up a complete bust like Pavano -

Why do I get the feeling that his FA is going to turn into an AL East bidding circus.Comment

Re: Official AJ Burnett Free Agent thread...
No way the Yanks go after him unless we can unload Pavano for a CF.

I don't see the Yankees going after him even if they do unload Pavano.
They might get in on it a little to drive the price up for other teams, but they won't get him.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: Official AJ Burnett Free Agent thread...
I know the Nationals, Rangers, and Mariners have some interest but it's pretty much a lock he will end up in the AL East.
The Jays, Red Sox, Yanks, and O's will all make inquiries.
He's a high risk, high reward signing. He has excellent stuff but he still gives up too many free passes. After 6 seasons, I don't expect this to change. This could be a huge problem because the AL East is going to score a ton of runs next season and features a lot of long ball hitters. AJ also hit the wall down the stretch. He was 47the in VORP (33.2) among pitchers.
But even with that said, he's a legit number 2 starter/borderline ace. He's also the most attractive FA pitcher. He'll easily get at least 11 mil a season on a 4 year deal.Comment

I don't see the Yankees going after him. The Jay's and O's could really use him. He should get a pretty good market considering hes probably the best free agent starter out there.Yankees

I think that the O's will eventually come out on top. Burnett is the ONLY guy Mazzone has been talking about, and the team of Angelos/Flanagan/Duquette seem committed to contending and raising payroll.Comment

I have a feeling Burnett will be in a Jays uniform. If it turns into an AL East bidding war Burnett will likely take less money to be with his former pitching coach and friend Brad Arnsberg.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Sour grapes?
I know he quit on the Marlins at the end of the year this past season but I think that has more to do with not being coddled or feeling like he's important to the franchise. Some guys need that kind of reassurance.
Anywho I doubt he'd pull those antics if he comes to Toronto mainly because of Arnsberg. Burnett would thrive with the Jays as he won't be a #1 guy. He can just do his thing while Roy Halladay gets all the press.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
