Two of my boys work at ESPN and I guess they sent out a company-wide email asking for extras in these press conferences. Well, there's this one 40-year-old sketchball guy who works there and I guess he was so excited about it and he went around telling everyone about it. Running around the cubicles telling people, "Hey, we can be on TV if we want to be!!" and all this stuff.

So at like 6:20pm or whenever the mock-press conference comes on the air, this sketchball guy's boss is looking around his cubicle and he isn't there. He asks another boss if he's seen the guy and he also says no. Then another guy in the office says, "Hey guys, turn on channel 55." So they turn on SC and the guy is sitting in the crowd at the press conference. Only problem is he didn't ask permission from either of his bosses. So his boss calls down to security at the press conference and tells a guard to grab the guy and kick him out. I guess the guy was heartbroken that they wouldn't let him stay and wouldn't talk to anyone for the rest of the night at work.

A "real" team like the Mets where every move he tried to make was blocked by the owner's son, who had no clue what was involved with running a baseball team? The same "real" team that few GM's wanted to make deals with, because the ownership tried to lowball at every turn? That Steve Philips? You mean the one who tried to land A-Rod, but the cheap owner wouldn't pay for him? You mean the Steve Philips that wanted to trade Mike Piazza while he was still worth something? He may not know it all, but he sure knows what it's like to work for the Wilpons.

yes - the one who put the blame on Valentine instead of himself for how bad the team did.. the one who signed & traded for washed up garbage like Vaughn & Alomar.. Yes, the Wilpons have alot to be blammed for, but Phillips wasn't "blame free" himself....

I know I'm late to the party, but I saw this segment for the first time last night. Wow. This really has to be one of the worst things I've seen. It kept my attention (in that looking at a car wreck sort of way) for about 5 minutes and then I changed the channel.

This is why I never watch SC anymore. Too much "fluff".

And dont forget, he traded Cedeno to get Bell (a bust) only to trade Dotel to get Cedeno back. Pure genius!

I try and stick to ESPN News now. This press conference thing is really weird. Who are they targeting? Who besides the overly exited extras would enjoy this crap.

I would be curious to know what would happen to their format if a viable competitor were to emerge (the one on CNN used to be decent) that followed the old format whether ESPN would scrap the Budweiser hotseat, Coors Silver Bullet Spotlight and all that other crap for the old format that got them to where they are. I would also be interested in seeing if viewership has increased since SC sold out because its kind of odd to turn your back on a format that was the formula for success. I guess they think its more about the ESPN brand which is why they have these various side enterprises (The MAgazine and now the ESPN Shop).

I'd like to know that as well. Too bad FSN was a regional network basically from the start. If there was a national FSN then we might have seen some things differently. CNN/SI was a valiant attempt but what doomed it was the lack of big time sports. I believe they tried carrying live sporting events near the end of it's lifespan and it was stuff like minor league baseball.

Now to be fair to ESPN "the magazine" was originally put out there to be a young and "hipper" alternative to Sports Illustrated. I've seen a few issues of "the magazine" and it seems to be a lot like its TV counterpart, all flash and no substance.

I wonder what the ratings are like these days compared to when ESPN was doing the bread and butter stuff. Of course you'll have to adjust the numbers to reflect the number of households that can get the network from both time periods. I'm sure that the numbers today dwarf the numbers from 10 or so years ago but if you adjust for the number of households then I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers back then are better.

I agree with that. I had ESPN the magazine the first 2 years it came out. I'm just glad I had it for free because I thought the magazine was terrible. Then again, I've had SI for about 15 years and have always liked it. So I might've unfairly judged ESPN's mag to SI.

Im thinking it doesnt reach that many more households than it did then...it pretty much saturated every market 10 years ago....although I could be wrong on that. The bigger consideration, however, is that now there is no competition like there was back then. The production quality is Fox's biggest problem not that its regional. Fox has a dim tint that makes it look cheap...even public access cheap.

Sportscenter has been getting worse and worse in my opinion--this latest fake news conference thing is by far the stupidest thing I've ever seen. It looks like a saturday night live skit, lol.

I was just about to come in here and post what purpose do these serve? It's ridiculous! I'd much rather see them actually get these GM's on Sportscenter for a quick 5 minute interview or something. This is the most waste of time I have ever seen ESPN do on sportscenter. I love how there are 30 or more reporters there, yet Sal, Schapp, and the black guy are the only ones that get their questions answered each time.
