    Mark Cuban to buy Pirates?

    http://news.com.com/Mark+Cuban+eyes+...3-5937178.html

For those that don't know, Cuban grew up here in Pittsburgh and has been mentioned a lot the past season in terms of buying the team.

With the All Star game next year and with the young talent this team has, the Pirates might be a good buy. Add in some good vets around the young guys (Duke, Maholm, Castillo, Eldred, Duffy etc...) and the Pirates could become a legit competitor. Kmac doesn't have the money to buy these players, but Cuban does (and Cuban has a good reputation in terms of making players happy).

This would be the greatest news in Pittsburgh baseball in over 10 years. Personally i'm a fan of tradition and while the Buccos have been losers for a long time they've also been a pretty traditional team. I'd love to see this happen. Pittsburghers deserve a winner.

Oh and maybe Cuban can have throwback nights with those old layer cake caps and yellow unis. I loved those unis. They were so ugly but they grew on me.

SPTO - Obviously I'd love to see it. The Pirates are one of the oldest teams in baseball so the tradition is definately there. However, the last 13 years have been dreadful. There hasn't even been a glimpse of hope until this past year (Duke, Maholm and the young guys).

It's just asking a lot for all these young guys to pan out and become the players they've been in the minors (most of them have dominated every level they've been at). Not to mention that it's still going to take 2-3 years for them to be competitive and that's hoping things go perfectly.

However, add in Cuban's money, a few GOOD FA signings and the timeline for this team competing shrinks dramatically.

Re: Mark Cuban to buy Pirates?

This comes up every once and a while, and every time it does I get my hopes up.

Last time I heard, Cuban made a promise that if the Pirates got into financial trouble and where threatening to leave town he'd step in and buy them and keep 'em in the burgh. But if Cuban is trying to buy the team even without the threat of moving that can only be good news.

I would absolutly love it if Cuban would buy the team. Not so sure if MLB would like it, but it would be great for Pittsburgh and the Pirates. I'm also kind of surprised at the McClatchy isn't more open to selling the team. Maybe it's just because of the boost he's getting from the All-Star game but I thought that he's be thrilled to sell it off.

Anyways, I'm still hoping that Cuban can get the team.

            The Pirates aren't for sale.

McClatchey has been looking to sell his portion of the team for over a year now. Frankly, he doesn't have the money to make this thing successful. However, if Cuban bought McClatchey's part, he still wouldn't be majority owner. He'd have to buy the portion from one other guy (who's name escapes me).

The Nutting family owns the other part of the team. They're from West Virginia and have little interest in the Pirates team (just as long as they get their money). I don't even know what they look like and to the best of my knowledge, never show their face(s) at the ballpark.

Just responding to Joeboo's reply to my post about Cuban making GOOD FA moves:

Yeah that's the biggest concern about Cuban. I think that he's done a great job at listening to management with the Mavs that I think he'll surround himself with solid baseball people. Cuban gets a bad rap as an outlandish owner but for the most part his management has been pretty solid.

Crap, and here I was hoping he'd somehow buy the Rangers and Stars from Tom Hicks.

If Mark Cuban buys the team, I see a lot of FA's willing to flock to Pittsburgh.

I wonder if he'll pull a Wayne Hyzenga (awful attempt at spelling) and just hop in for a few years and prove how easy it is to win a sport with no salary cap like the '97 Marlins.

Either way, I think it'd be great for baseball and great for Pittsburgh. A stadium that gorgeous deserves to have a winner playing in it!!

Re: Mark Cuban to buy Pirates?

Reports today are even more conflicting. The current part owner (Kevin McClatchey) is again stating that the Pirates aren't for sale and he's not sure where these rumors are coming from.

Just seems odd that a lot of talk has been surrounding Cuban for a number of months now and each time it heats up again, McClatchey comes out and states the same thing.

At least Cuban has shown interest. The way I see it, if he is really interested and puts up enough $$$, McClatchey would be crazy to turn it down. I'm just not sure McClatchey has the type of money to make this organization successful and therefore make a nice profit off of it.

More often then not when that happens it's usually a sign that there's some fire in that smoke (truth to rumours) so I'm pretty sure that we'll hear about the Pirates being sold to Cuban by the end of the winter meetngs.
