Carpenter wins NL Cy Young
Not shocking, but I wouldn't have been shocked had Dontrelle won it either.

Re: Carpenter wins NL Cy Young
Could have went to Willis BUT I have no problem with Carpenter winning it. In fact, it wouldn't have been a shock if Roger Clemens won it. I'd had no problem with that either. I know he only got 13 wins but geesh, if he'd at least had 4 runs/game to play with he would have definitley won 25 games this season.I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. Than the one who comes up like an angel and is nothing but a devil. - Malcolm X -

I would've given it to Dontrelle but I can't complain about this. It's nice to see a Blue Jay product do good.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Carpenter wins NL Cy Young
The voters screwed over Clemens.
Once again they fell victim to Wins.
Let's look at the 3 contenders:
Clemens:
VORP: 80.6
FIP: 2.85
ERA+: 247
Carpenter:
VORP: 68.4
FIP: 2.88
ERA+: 163
Willis:
VORP: 68.1
FIP: 2.97
ERA+: 165
At least the Astros are happy they don't have to pay a bonus because of bonehead writers.Comment

Re: Carpenter wins NL Cy Young
I would have picked Clemens. He held opponents to a sub .200 BAA and had a 1.01 WHIP while making 32 starts this year. His numbers were far and away better than both Carpenter's and Willis', aside from wins (Carpenter had more strikeouts, as well). I think Carpenter is a better choice than Willis though, as aside from ERA, he bested Willis in almost every other category. Voters like wins though, so it isn't a surprise to see Roger get no love.Comment

It's been a long time since a Cardinal's pitcher has won the Cy Young. Well deserved in my opinion.PSN: sportdan30

Another horrible Cy Young choice. I think it should've been Clemens, and it shouldn't have even been close.Comment

Clemens had all the other stats very much in his favor. Carpenter was second and Willis was third. To be honest, Willis was below Carpenter in almost every stat aside from W and ERA. He really was a somewhat distant 3rd IMO to Clemens and Carpenter.Comment

Re: Carpenter wins NL Cy Young
So you go with Clemens to win because of the lower ERA, yet think Willis should have been third despite a lower ERA and more wins than Carpenter....so is ERA the factor or not?Comment

Re: Carpenter wins NL Cy Young
Why did the 'win' become the end all-be all of pitching stats? You have to wonder if it has to do with NY sportswriters back in the day when NY had 3 good teams. In their world it was all about their teams and this was at a time where sports writers showered adulation on the stars and so you have to wonder if the 'win' became the pre-eminent pitching stat for this reason. But its easily one of the worst stats in evaluatiing pitchers. ERA is much better even though thats not foolproof either. But on the other hand people have been getting screwed like this for years when playing on teams with anemic run support, so why should Clemens be any different than, say, Nolan Ryan as this happened to him one year as well?Comment

Clemens was better than both Carpenter and Willis in almost all of those categories (if not all of them).
Neither W or ERA is really indicative IMO. ERA is a decent stat, but I'll take VORP and ERA+ over that anyday.Comment
