    Investigative Report on Steroids

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/etick...steroids&num=1

This is a very long article, but it's also very interesting IMO. It tells of different behind the scene stories that have happened over the years. Essentially, baseball has turned a blind eye to steroids for a LONG time. Commisioners, Owners, GM's, players......they all knew.

If you read this and some of the stories, go back and look at the stats of certain players. Take Lenny Dykstra for example. Before 1993 he told a steroid friend that he needed to get big. His weight-lifting, steroid buddy created a steroid cocktail for Lenny to take. The next year he pops 19 HR's and has the best year of his career.

I'm usually not one to enjoy ESPN The Magazine articles, but this one was excellent.

Oh steroids has been in baseball for so long, and no one even cared. Everyone knew about it, anyone who said they didn't is flat out lying! When I was in college, I knew guys from the baseball team who were taking them, and we were a little D2 school. If guys are taking it at a D2 school, I guarantee you they're taking it to make millions of $$ for major league baseball.

This whole Rafael Palmeiro thing is a joke. So Raffy, you're telling me, that you make millions of dollars per year, and have for your entire career. And you start feeling a little run down, so instead of asking a trainer on the Baltimore Orioles, you decide...I'll ask the shortstop for a shot of B12. You yourself said, it is not uncommon for B12 shots to be contaminated with steroids, but in this case, you decide to take the chance from Tejada, whom you have implicated as a steroid user, to get you a B12 shot. Next, again, instead of asking a doctor, or a trainer to inject this B12 shot in you, you decide you'll ask your wife, since she gives the dogs shots???

    Come on......get real.

Of course it's been in the game for a long time. Kind of like uppers were the drug of choice in the 70's and earlier.

It's just interesting to me to read stories about people on the inside. Stories about how they got the steroids and how they first became involved in it.

I also thought it was interesting to see how Wally Joyner asked Caminiti for some, took 3 pills and then flushed the 'roids because he decided it wasn't for him.

Heck, I knew guys who took them in high school. That was over 10 years ago and a few football players and 2 baseball players I knew took them. The one baseball player was always a tall, lanky kid and then over one summer he was a mountain of muscle. Got him a full ride to Tennessee though. Of courses he then suffered from injuries and almost never played.

I read the first section but I have to head out. It's a good read so far and I intend to read the rest.

I posted an article that summed up what's in "the magazine" article a while ago. I will read this and give my impressions. My impressions will be online by the end of the night.

Well I finally read the entire article. The article confirmed my thoughts on how long MLB execs and others have known about the use of steroids and other drugs of similar nature. Sadly I think I agree with the last part's insinuation that there are newer and better substances being used these days.

One thing this article does tho is give a very credible roadmap to the history of substance abuse in MLB and I suspect that congress will use this as a means to force an all encompassing steroid program.

I think Selig makes a good point in the intro. Personally I think he is often used as a whipping boy for problem with baseball in general and I agree that it is absurd to act as if he is the one to blame, while excusing baseball execs, agents, trainers and journalists.
