    Home Field Advantage

I was thinking about how teams can get big advantages by playing in their park, as opposed to going somewhere else... and it got me thinking... what stadium gives their home-team the biggest boost over their competition... so I came up with this:

    Home Win % - Road Win %

(for all the seasons that a team is in their current park)... I did 3 teams...

Pittsburgh Pirates (PNC Park) ... 7.14% (I wanted to try a newer park, see how its working out for Pittsburgh... not bad, not bad)

New York Yankees (Yankee Stadium II) ... 8.26% (Hopefully their new stadium brings just as much an advantage or more to the Yankees)

Colorado Rockies (Coors Field) ... 17.12% (This came as no surprise, considering their opponents probably have trouble adjusting to the difference in air pressure... hard to breathe... and I'm sure other teams power pitchers try to prepare for Coors, but they still underestimate the surroundings.

I am taking requests!!!... Any stadium... current, old, and I'll do my best to post them.

Minnesota Twins (HHH MetroDome) ... 9.44% (Not a significant advantage, but more than other stadiums... if this is true for the next two... then it is a little better to build a dome for your team!)

Toronto Blue Jays (Skydome/Rogers Centre) ... 5.22% (Ummmm... yeah... so what you heard is definetely a myth... especially for the Jays, who don't get much of a boost when they come home... but that could just be those Canadien fans only caring about hockey again ... not rooting for their team, when they need it)

Houston Astros (Astrodome) ... 11.72% (Now this park brings something to the fans of the Astros... its always good to know that your team will win more when you are watching them at home... but you may have to attribute most of the success to no other team being used to any kind of astro turf since Houston was the only team using it for a while.

Overall... I think the myth has some holes... but between Houston and Minnesota, it can be a good thing to play under a roof. In Toronto... its probably just the fans who aren't showing up or something.

Well I think the Jays were pretty good in the Dome in the early days. It's true that in the past few years they haven't too well in there. That's probably a combination of bad teams and no real home crowd enviroment. (We're notoriously quiet even the Big O was louder)

I'll do Fenway and Wrigley tomorrow because those will take longer than the others considering they have been around for quite a while.

I did 4 Newer stadiums however...

Seattle Mariners (Safeco Field) ... 6.57% It might have made a difference if teams were forced to play under the rain, that the Mariners would have accustomed themselves to, but since this park has a retractable roof, Seattle's opponents always play in good weather. During the Mariners' record setting season, they won more games on the road than in the comfort of their own home. You wonder why they couldn't win in the playoffs... they had the BEST record... so they PLAYED AT HOME!!!

Tampa Bay Devil Rays (Tropicana Field) ... 8.41% People criticize the look and feel of the stadium, but they can't argue with the fact that the park gives Tampa Bay a little advantage here and there. Considering it's a dome though, this percentage should be a little higher, and that means the fans aren't showing up... which comes full circle with: "This is an UGLY park."

Arizona Diamondbacks (Bank One Ballpark) ... 6.17% Arizona can have the best record in the NL, but they shouldn't expect much of a home-field advantage. The problem can trace right back to the "Retractable Roof" issue in which Seattle has been suffering. Let your opponents feel the atmosphere of Phoenix and I promise the Diamondbacks will make the Home fans proud.

Detroit Tigers (Comerica Park) ... 8.32% I would call anything in between 7.5 and 8.5 the norm... so what is there to say about Detroit... they are normal... but if you are a ballpark designer or attendance promoter... the norm isn't enough. You have to exceed averages, supercede the system. When your team wins 43 games in a season of 162 games, you need to get a little cooking going in the home kitchen.

I thought I'd do Minute Maid Park and compare it to the Astrodome

and I've come to the conclusion that Houston should be sad that they moved out of the ol' dome and into the park with a weird centerfield.

              Astrodome - 11.72%
              Minute Maid - 8.44%

Thats really too bad... maybe this season vs. the White Sox, they could have brought home at least a game on their own turf (lol).

The attendance numbers weren't even down...

In the last season at the Astrodome... The Astros seated just about as much as they have been getting from Minute-Maid attendance. I mean, during the 80's... YIKES!... Houston wasn't marketing anything... but I'm surprised at that... why didn't the fans want to come see the Astros (since they were winning about 12% more of their games there, than anywhere else).

Oh well... good luck to Houston... that Percentage right now isn't that bad anyway... it's just that it was BETTER before!
