Ortiz: "Manny is not returning to Boston"

'Manny is not returning to Boston,' Ortiz says
    Associated Press

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- One of baseball's most fearsome offensive duos -- the Boston Red Sox's David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez -- appears to be history.

According to Ortiz, "Manny is not returning to Boston."

"Manny is living through a difficult situation [in Boston] that only he and his family know, and he no longer wants to play there," said Ortiz after arriving early Monday in the Dominican Republic.

Ramirez has asked for a trade in each of his five seasons with the Red Sox, but apparently this one is definite.

"I spoke with him last week before he left for Brazil and he told me that he wants to go to a team in the West," Ortiz, the Red Sox's designated hitter, said.

Ramirez has three years worth $160 million remaining on his contract with the Red Sox. Because of his status as a player with 10 seasons in the major leagues and five with the same team, he is allowed to approve any trade.

"I found out that that they are doing everything possible to trade him," Ortiz said.

The Los Angeles Angeles of Anaheim have been named as a possible destination for Ramirez, as well as the New York Mets.

I wonder what the personal problem is?

It does indeed sound like the dynamic duo of Big Papi and Manny is over. We'll see just how valuable Ortiz is to the Sox next season if that's the case.

My question is still...who's gonna take him? Anaheim has shown no interest. The Mets are on the verge of getting Delgado. What other teams out there would be willing to trade for Manny? If Manny thinks the Red Sox are going to trade him for nothing and pay part of his salary, he's insane. I think in the end his choices are going to be retire or play in Boston. The good thing about Manny though is he'll hit 40 HR's and 130 RBI's regardless of how unhappy he is.

Not very valuable. All he'll be doing is walking to first base 3 times a game. Teams would be insane to pitch to Ortiz without Manny behind him.

How about you guys take Shea back as well as Orlando Hudson and one of the jays pitching prospects and we eat part of Manny's salary?

According to ESPN during the Trade Deadline they said that the Jays made an offer for Manny. I'm sure that was part of the deal but I think the Jays may have to give up a minor league pitching prospect as well. I'd do the deal tho. The Jays have a good defense for the most part. We need some power in the lineup tho.

Camulos, are you that confident pitchers would do the Barry Bonds routine with Big Papi? If Ortiz were to hit them hard in the early part of the season then I can see that happening but I think that treatment is for very rare talents.

They would at least do it at the end of close games. I just can't see managers letting Papi beat them when he would be followed by guys like Lowell, Nixon and Varitek. Papi struggled early this year when they mixed up the batting order and had him hitting cleanup. Even if he doesn't get walked, I think pitchers will be very reluctant to challenge him.

I also remember Ortiz saying last winter: "Pedro ain't pitching for no Mets". How'd that work out for you? Look for Manny to settle in nicely in the no. 4 spot between Carlos & Carlos.

I highly doubt it. They still want to sign Wagner. You think they're gonna have enough money for all this?

Yes I do. Word is if they don't sign a catcher or don't trade for Soriano or Vazquez, they will go after Ramirez after they sign Wagner. Omar has a hard-on for Manny, which is good for us Met fans. I don't mind Ramon Castro or Joe Hietpas behind the plate or Anderson Hernandez or Jeff Keppinger at second as long as Manny is in RF.

There's no way Manny is going to the Mets in a 2 team deal because Yusmeiro Petit was an important component of any potential trade to be made. He was traded to the Marlins today.

The other given in any Ramirez trade, Milledge, is still in the Mets organization. I imagine any trade involving Ramirez and the Mets now would have to include a 3rd team. Otherwise, I don't see it happening; not enough talent being sent back to the Red Sox.

I have confidence in my GM to get the job done. One way or another, he always gets his man. Just ask Carlos Delgado.
