Brian Giles Sweepstakes- Between the Jays and Indians?

InsideTheDome has confirmed from multiple sources that the first offer Giles received was about ten days ago from the St. Louis Cardinals. That offer was a three-year contract, worth $27-28 million.

Since then it is believe the Cleveland Indians and the Toronto Blue Jays each made an offer to the free agent outfielder. Both of the clubs also offered a three-year contract, in the neighborhood of $30 milllion. As one source put it, Bick then went back to the Padres and offered them a discount on Giles, but the club refused the counterproposal on Tuesday.

One baseball insider was unaware that the Blue Jays are pursuing Giles this seriously.

“I was under the impression that the Giles sweepstakes involve the Yankees, Cardinals, Padres, Mariners, Dodgers and Indians.”

InsideTheDome spoke with two different sources Thursday evening and both confirmed that Blue Jays are very involved in the race, and one went as far as saying it is between the Indians and the Blue Jays.

“Let’s just say B.J. Ryan is not the only free agent the Indians and Blue Jays both want.”

The source did not rule out the fact that the Blue Jays can sign all three free agents they are after (Burnett, Ryan and Giles).

“I’d think J.P. would feel more comfortable clearing some payroll beforehand, but that certainly is a possibility, if the contracts are put together in a creative manner.

insidethedome? Is this some kind of Blue Jays fan site? I'll have to check this out.

As for the info in that report I can believe it. JP has money to spend this year so it's not like it's that surprising. If we get Giles we can trade one of our OFs for another bat and maybe even pick up Piazza for a cheap price to be DH.

I also wouldn't be too surprised if we could get those 3 guys. I heard from Buster Olney a couple days ago that the Yanks aren't going to be freewheeling this year and that BJ Ryan said no to the Yanks as he wants to close.

There was also an article saying that the Brewers offered Overbay for McGowan, but JP declined. Talks are still continuing between the Jays and Brewers however.

        Here's the Overbay article...

        Overbay interests the Jays

By BOB ELLIOTT -- Toronto Sun

Red Rover, Red Rover, Let Lyle come over!

That has been the Blue Jays' chant recently as they attempt to acquire first baseman Lyle Overbay from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Overbay, who turns 29 in January, hit .276 with 19 homers and 72 RBIs in 158 games this past season.

Initially, the Brewers asked the Jays for former No. 1 pick, right-handed starter Dustin McGowan.

The Jays declined, but talks could continue at the winter meetings in Dallas.

        TWO BATS NEEDED

McGowan, 23, was 1-3 in seven starts with a 6.35 earned run average for the Jays this season. He pitched 13 games, working 45 1/3 innings, walking 17 and striking out 34.

The Jays are searching for two bats to add to their 2006 lineup and have been trying to acquire outfielder Kevin Mench from the Texas Rangers, as well.

        In 2004, Overbay, a left-handed swinger, hit .301 with 53 doubles, 16 homers and 87 RBIs in 159 games.

He earned $446,000 US in 2005, but will get a large bump this off-season through salary arbitration.

Thanks I was looking for the article but couldn't find it. Hmm I dunno about Overbay. He's got a good bat and he plays a decent 1B but I was thinking someone with more power.

Oh and the last time Bob Elliott was relevant was when Gord Ash was running the team.

Brian Giles is way too expensive to stay in San Diego given the situation. His power numbers are declining, but despite that he is still one of the top outfielders. I'd love for him to stay in San Diego, but we've got no other power hitters to help him out. I think Giles would look good in that Indians lineup with Travis Hafner.

I thought the Cubs were pursuing him as well. I guess they pulled out now since they're on the verge of landing Pierre.

My guess is St. Louis. He'd be a destructive force in that lineup.
