Get ready to welcome Giles to the Jays

According to Bob Elliot, the Jays offered Giles a 5yr/55 mil contract. He will be 35 years old next season. This offer blows away everybody else in terms of the length. No other club is going to match this offer.

The Jays are doing their best to drive up the price and length of contracts for FA's this off-season. The Players Union should be sending out a special Christmas card to JP.

JP was on mlb radio today and he denied the offer. He said a 5 yr deal to Giles would be a dealbreaker. I would love to believe JP but he also denied the story that the Jays signed Ryan for 5/47 mil, and we know that did happen.

I don't care if anyone says this is overpaying. We need good players to come to TO. Despite Toronto being a great destination, players are still iffy about committing 4-5 season to being here.

That really is a lot of years for him. Although Giles is an OBP machine.

His power dipped in SD - whether it was his age, ballpark, lack of 'roids or something else, but his OBP hasn't suffered much. That's always a positive.

The Blue Jays are going to be horrible, and out of money. Somebody should tell them they aren't the Yankees....who can fix their mistakes in later years by just ignoring how much they spend.

wow are the salaries going way out there this year... Giles 5 yrs/$55M for a 35 yr old player who complains about distance to his power ally? That is overpaying so the Jays can have him.

You do know that even if the Jays signed Giles for that amount, they would still have approximately $10 million extra?

And I think that JP's going to get a 3-year extension with all the 5-year deals.

To be honest I think it's because it's another country and I think it's the stadium a lil bit. That thing is an eye sore and the astroturf era is dead.

Plus wasn't there a dude in the NBA who refused a trade to Toronto because of the higher taxes? Maybe it was a MLB'er who wouldn't sign there as an FA because of it. Or maybe I'm way off.

Give them credit for spending money, but not really wisely. I get they have to overspend to make free agents want to come to Toronto, but Giles is getting old 5 years is too much.

BJ Ryan I like because hes still young. If they are going to overspend at least keep it to young guys.

Well, good luck to the Jays if they sign Giles. I would like to see them knock off the Sox and Yankees. Alot of years for a guy his age, but they did what was necessary to get their man. At least Giles is a poven hitter.

Unlike the Yanks the Jays actually have a great farm system.

Did you watch any Jays games last year? The stadium is vastly improved with grass turf similar to what Minnesota has. There's also going to be improvments this year by widening the concourses and I THINK removing some seats. I've heard from MLB players that they enjoy playing in Toronto due to the site lines. So while it's not a retro ballpark it's still very useful.

Now onto my feelings on this signing. It was going to happen as according to Jeff Blair last night if none of the So Cal teams were going to sign him then his 1st choice would be Toronto. The length of the deal is a bit troubling but it's a trade off that you have to make with the exchange rate.

Oh and taxation is not as huge as a problem as athletes make it out to be.

Kerplunk, we 80 games last year with no offense and a horrible closer.

To be honest I think it's because it's another country and I think it's the stadium a lil bit. That thing is an eye sore and the astroturf era is dead.

You're a Yankee fan and you didn't realize that the astroturf was taken out last season. They play the Jays about 9-10 times at home.

The Skydome is a nice stadium when it's filled up. They added some nice video boards in the outfield warning tracks and still have one of the largest scoreboards. I don't think players care much about how an arena looks anyway. I don't really consider Fenway to be that attractive at all.

Plus wasn't there a dude in the NBA who refused a trade to Toronto because of the higher taxes? Maybe it was a MLB'er who wouldn't sign there as an FA because of it. Or maybe I'm way off.
Taxes would only be an issue if the player was living there all year round.

Nice, overpaying for two average players. Solid move...

Ryan and Giles are average players? LOL

Explain to me how both players are "average"? Feel free to use statistical analysis to back up your statement.

Average, no. But a higher chance for Giles to be on a decline from this point on, maybe.
