    Phils sign Tom Gordon

Maybe a bit of an overpay but they had to do it.

It's over-paying if he's your setup guy. But it looks as though he mihgt be closing. Yikes.

Looks like the market is moving towards Hoffman. Has someone offered a contract to him yet so the Padres can give him an offer that matches it?

Ugh. I was hoping we'd acquire Gordon and a guy like Baez to be our setup man and closer, but I doubt we're paying Gordon $6/year to be a setup man.

I've liked Gillick's other moves, but I'm not real keen on this one. Flash's arm has a lot of miles on it and we're giving up a first-round draft pick and $18M guaranteed to a 38-year-old whose K/9 really dropped off last year. I dunno.

Oh well, looks like Farnsworth is the setup man in NYC afterall.

Nope, no one has offered anything to him despite what some reports have said.

Three years?! Whats the over/under Gordon is still effective in 2008?

I'm glad Gordon is out. He often fell victim to A-Roditis.....choking when we needed him most. Us giving him 3-years for $18 mil would have been idiotic for us.

I don't like this signing. I wonder why Gillick didn't make a run at Hoffman or another FA closer?

BTW if the Phils didn't pick up anyone is there any pitcher on the team that could be Closer material?

Because the Phils have coveted Gordon for years and Hoffman will no doubt command a higher price than Gordon did. Assuming we still have the financial wiggle room to get some more bullpen help, I'd rather see Gordon here at $18M over 3 years than Hoffman making something like $30M over the same time, which is the kind of offer he'll probably fetch.

And no, there's really nobody on the team right now who you could call closer material. A lot of fans are screaming for Padilla to be given a chance and he is a hard thrower who has good stuff, but his mental makeup is flat-out terrible and I believe he'd be an absolute disaster as a closer. His mental implosions as a starter are painful enough to watch as it is.

By the way, thanks for ruining the FA market with that BJ Ryan signing....

He didn't want to come back. It was really obvious.
