So long to a classy 1bman..

John Olerud today announced his retirement from baseball.. despite his life- affecting injury (a brain anuerism), he play world class defense & had some clutch hits during his career - not one to be a big power hitter, but did enough with the bat to be a threat.. So long, John & thanks...

        Recognize, bro...
John Olerud was a great hitter, not just a threat...
        Career
        BA: .295 OPS:.863

        HR: 255 RBI: 1230

        2b: 500

Good K/AB ratio, .997 fielding percentage to boot.
        Clutch, too...

There are surely several, if not many, pitchers that are quite happy not to face him. He is no Vlad or Manny, but a great and smart hitter nonetheless.
        Australian Rules Football...just sayin'

Kinda of a funny story with John Olerud. My buddy(12 at the time) was at a Sox game and Olerud was on the opposing team. My friend goes down to where the on deck circle is at US Cellular and says " Mr Olerud, I only have a few more weeks to live. Can I please have your autograph?" John looks at him and says "Hey kid, we're playing a game here" and turns away. Ahhh Johnny, always focused on the game.

I shudder to think how much worse Kevin Millar's numbers would have been last year if not for sharing time at 1B with Olerud.
            Here's to a great career John .

John Olerud is a hall of famer in my books. So long to one of the classest guys to ever wear a Jays uniform.

                Best John Olerud moment...

I was watching a Mariners game in, oh jeez, probably 2002, and the M's were on the road, and some fan yelled to Olerud, "Hey Olerud! You left your fielding hat on!". I found it really funny.

But ol' John was great while he was here.

He was always a player that I rooted for. He had an incredible career, he was one of the best clutch hitters I can think of. I thought he would be the next Tony Gwynn with the bat, would have LOVED to see him get to 3000 hits.

Sad. He'll definitely be missed around the league.

I'm sure he'll be in coaching by 07 or 08.

My great uncle coached Johnny O in high school in Bellvue (spelling) Washington. I've always liked him, and he was a great player on the 99 Mets.

I only had the privelage of having Johnny O on my Sox for about half a year, but he was easily in my favortie 4 Sox of the year. My greatest moment of him is when I went to the game this year, and he tied it up with a pinch-hit RBI. Then, the next game I went to, a week later, saved a couple of runs and ultimately the game with some gold glove plays, and was even intentionally walked. What a sweet swing the guy had. Great career John.
