Pirates and Jays discussing a trade

The Pirates have interest in Alex Rios and the Jays asked for Paul Maholm. The Pirates refused and countered with Tom Gorzelanny.

Despite the Jays are already stacked with left handed pitching prospects, I would pull the trigger on the deal. Gorzelanny looks like a B type prospect and I think very little of Rios. His MVP AA season looks like a fluke.

It's a good gamble for the Pirates because they're a small market team and Rios is young and cheap. Rios would also vastly improve their D.

That wouldn't be a bright move for Toronto unless they have something lined up to pickup a couple of OFers. They need help out there.

Why the hell would we trade a B prospect at a position we need, for a B prospect at a position where we are fine?

      Dumb move IMO...

I'm glad the Pirates aren't parting with Maholm. He's going to be very good and in the mold of Zack Duke. Maholm was actually the #8 pick in the draft a few years ago.

I'm surprised Gorzelanny was even mentioned. He's young and has an incredible arm. He's the only LH hurler in the Pirates minor league system that has a plus arm (he throws around 95 and can hit 97 when needed). The Pirates have talked very highly of this kid and he even got a sniff of the big leagues this past year.

Of course the Jays wouldn't trade Rios unless JP was going to get another RF.

At this point the price is too high for Wilkerson and Mench. The Jays are looking at Reggie Sanders (he outslugged every single Jay last season) but he wants a multi-year deal.

Looks like the Jays have given up on Wilkerson and Mench...

But I still don't understand this move. You're trading a potential 5-tool player (although, more realistically, he'd probably be a 4), for a prospect. Even if Sanders is signed, I'd start him over Catalanotto/Johnson before Rios.

The key word is potential. If you look at his numbers ever since he turned pro, they're not good.

Frankly I don't understand why some people still think he will be a power hitter. Nothing in his past suggests this. He has never hit 15 HR's at any level.

It's time to trade him while some teams still like his potential to break out.

I'm willing to roll the dice and hope he doesn't turn it around like what Felipe Lopez has done.

                Rios is expandable.

I guarantee that Rios will be a 20-20 guy next year. If he gets traded, I'll put that in my sig.

I fail to see what the great big deal is with Rios.

Agreed, he struggles at times to the point he seems to just guess and close his eyes.

I don't see where the 20-20 talk is coming from.

Um I don't think this trade will happen. I'd only trade Rios if i'm going to get a bat in return. It doesn't make sense to trade for more pitching when we're stacked with pitching prospects.

It's harder to get good bats than to get good arms. Every team needs pitching... and teams will be interested in us sooner or later. So I don't think it can hurt.
