I would fire Dusty Baker.
I would hire the finest training staff in the world to keep these guys healthy.
I would make Zambrano my number 1, and hire a pitching coach according to Mark Prior's liking--he needs to be refined and maintained (Both prior and the coach)
I would get rid of ANY FRIGGIN BODY that refuses to take 75% of their first pitches at the plate.
I would make my hitting coach focus on patience.
I would try to make Wrigley a little deeper.
Find a veteran starter, or someone that can eat innings, not a superstar, but a solid guy.
We have a big question mark in the middle of our order after Lee and Ramirez, I'd audition young guys, but also search for a solid bat to go there--either a .285/20HR guy or a .270/30HR guy...(We should have made a better push for Huff)

I might try to contact Lou Pineilla, or maybe talk to Ryne Sandberg about the job...he can't write an interesting article, but he knows the game. Maybe Shawon Dunston. Tony Gwynn? New blood.

Oh yeah, almost forgot
I would make better use out of the young arms in my farm system, rather than trade them all away...we could have had Pierre for less, and I am sure we would love to have Willis...I understand using them in trades, but I would find out what I had first, and I think we will want Mitre before the season is over.

This is a longshot but I would trade Jeff Francouer and Wilson Betimet for Miguel Cabrera. I doubt that the Marlins would take just that but don't know what else I would offer.

I wouldnt trade Cabrera if I was able to select any two players on the Braves that I wanted, probably not for any three

I'm as big a guy with respect to patience and discipline at the plate as anybody you'll find, however, simply applying theories such as the above to hitting is pointless. If you fill a team with guys who swing at the first pitch only 25% of the time, then the pitchers will ultimately recognize this, and get hitters down early in a count.

What I'm saying is that the key to hitting is getting your type of pitch to hit. Whether this pitch comes on the 1st or 10th pitch is irrelevant. If an MLB hitter swings at the pitch he is looking to hit, he will have lots of success in the long run. Now, there are plenty of pitchers who have problems with control, and in these cases, it is in the hitters best interest to be very selective and wait for the best pitch. If you are facing a pitcher with impeccable command (like a Jon Lieber or David Wells type), you better damn sure not sit around and wait to get ahead in the count, otherwise you're gonna lose more often than succeed.
The key is balance and knowing how to adapt versus different kinds of pitchers.

It would definatly be a longshot. You wouldn't but im not sure whether the Marlins would or not. Had we still have Marte. I don't think would've declined Francouer/Marte for Cabrera. Obviously they have done worse deals. Cabrera is a top player though so they should obviously not trade him or even try to trade him.

The Twins are falling quickly as we speak... the Central Division is getting too strong for them to really contend anymore...

This is where the Yankees sign Torii Hunter as our much needed CF, because the Twins wouldn't really make an effort at a counter-offer, because they really need to rebuild at this point around Johan Santana.

Yeah, it was a bit of a joke...I mean, really....
However, the "take the first pitch" rule is all but universal, yet still applies, even though pitchers are aware of it...
It is the "hit it if it asks to be hit" rule that cancels it out...
My point is that, even without Sosa, the cubs do not exercise enough discipline at the plate...and discipline begins with attempting to get a 1-0 count.

Also, is there not something more worthwhile to mention in my post than this rhetorical matter...?
