Has Your Team Addressed it's Needs?

Has your team addressed it's biggest problems through this offseason?

The Padres addressed a few, but there are still glaring holes in this team.

    1) Any third basemen with power is an improvement over Sean Burroughs. Even if Vinny Castilla does as poor as he did last season, that is still better than what the Padres got out of that position ever since Nevin was moved elsewhere in favor of an unproven prospect.
    2) Any true centerfielder is an improvement over Dave Roberts. Mike Cameron should easily match the production of the centerfielders since Mark Kotsay's big year in 2002 and that's saying a lot about what has happened there the past 3 years. Good defensively.
    3) Anyone in leftfield not named Ryan Klesko is a big improvement. Klesko was just a butcher out there defensively and he didn't provide enough offense the past two seasons to negate his poor defense. Him moving back to 1st will most likely benefit the team. The tandem of Dave Roberts/Ben Johnson/Termell Sledge should easily be a welcome solution to LF.

However, they did not address these things:

Power in the offense (I don't think anyone will hit more than 30 this year for the Padres again).
Starting rotation, back end (we've got Woody Williams still... and Chan Ho Park, and I don't even know who our fifth starter will be)
Catcher, Ramon Hernandez talked his way out of contract talks during the season with his demands. Trading a former All-Star second basemen who had an injury plagued season for a backup catcher definitely got disapproval fro many fans.

This team is still questionable at:

Bullpen (we lost 3 relievers from last season, Hammonds, Seanez, and Otsuka), Hensley might be put in the rotation, leaving the bullpen at Hoffman, Linebrink, Brocail, and four other people.
Speed (Dave Roberts is a nice speed asset, but I doubt he plays more than 110 games this year, this team lacks the necessary speed at Petco Park).
Offense (We lost Loretta, I think Giles is the only player capable in this lineup of hitting .300... or maybe .290)

front line type of starter to compliment doc? check

    Bonafide closer? check

4-hole type of hitter in the lineup? check

A 1B who can get on base and hit for power? check

Seems like the Jays addressed most of their needs. We have a glut of talent in the 1B/3B positions so I can see either Koskie or Hillenbrand being shipped off for some deph. Overall i'm happy with the moves this offseason.

Crap, I hate this thread. I think we created more needs than we addressed.

        Addressed:
        #2 Starter - Beckett
Bullpen - Mota, Seanez, re-signed Timlin
        2B - Loretta
        3B - Lowell, Marte
        1B - Youkilis

        Not Addressed:
1B - Need a LH to platoon with Youk
SS - Traded the #1 prospect, then traded the starter
LF - What's gonna happen to Manny?
        CF - Let Damon walk
OF - Need a backup OF as well.

Nope. Trading a couple of guys in their 20's for Tony Womack was stupid. There isn't a need for him unless they want him to be a vet off the bench. Getting Dave Williams for Casey might turn out to be okay but the guy gives up HR's and how many LH'd starters do they need in the rotation? They already have Claussen and Milton, not that those two are anything to write home about. I doubt they'll make any moves to address needs. The GM of the team is incompetent.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with JP's moves this offseason . Maybe if we can replace Rios in RF, and *maybe* get a better backup catcher than Quiroz, that would be pretty much the perfect offseason.

              Pirates.

The Owner stated he wanted 2 power bats in the offseason. Of course he's delusional and has no clue what he's doing, but that was the big request in the offseason. The 2 biggest holes were RF and 3B.

              1. Power hitting 3B. They signed Joe Randa.
              2. Power hitting RF. No changes made.
              3. Upgraded with Sean Casey at 1B.
              4. Traded for Damaso Marte and signed Roberto Hernandez for the bullpen.

Did they address everything they needed? Not even close. They still have very little power aside from Jason Bay, but did get a little stronger with the addition of Casey and that also gives power hitting 1B Brad Eldred a little more seasoning in AAA.

I wouldn't call a LH to platoon with Youkilis a need. But I don't think we created more than we solved by any means. We didn't make this Manny situation and Damon seemed bent on leaving. And as much as it wouldn't be the end of the world if it did happen, I am sure the Sox won't go into opening day with Cora as their SS starter.

At 1B, we also need somebody who can be a defensive replacement. Youkilis has started 5 career games at 1B and has never started regularly at any position. I think it would be a mistake to assume he can be our everyday 1B next year.

As far as Damon, he was bent on leaving because the Red Sox made it clear that they didn't want him. Their initial offer was 3 for 29, which is just laughable. They then upped it to 4 for 40 and basically said take it or leave it, when it was clear that other teams would offer more.

Re: Has Your Team Addressed it's Needs?

The Baltimore Orioles were the Baltimore Orioles this offseason.

                        Addresed:

1B - Javy Lopez? Offense is their but how will he play defensively? This then opened up another hole...

C - Ramon Hernandez : Great signing...one of the elite catchers in the game right now.

OF - Burnitz gives us power and decent defensive but is this the best Flanagan could of done?

RP - After BJ Ryan left all we did was trade Kline for Hawkins (solid trade but hardly helpful). Julio and Chris Ray will be the keys to making this bullpen good. So I won't put this is unadressed.

                        Unadressed:

Backup 2B - Who knows when Roberts comes back?

Possibility of moving Mora to LF and obtaining a 3B - So far nothing. I wanted Randa but I guess Flanagan didn't...

SP - What a surprise!!!!!!!! NOTHING! Not even one starter so far and the market for starters is starting to run very thin. Let's trade for Zito dammit! (and not Tejada...). Mazzone will be helpful to Cabrera and Bedard though.

We should of kept Byrnes or even Bigbie around but instead we have a big hole in the outfield...

Yankees biggest needs were CF and bullpen.

                          They got the centerfielder.

They've made a lot of moves in the bullpen, every player they acquired has question marks, so we'll see if it's actually improved.

There are questions in the rotation, but there really wasn't anything they could do with the rotation, as they already have 6 starters now. Hopefully Johnson can pitch like he did in the 2nd half all year next year, Wang and Chacon continue to improve, and Pavano bounces back. We'll see though.

                            Cardinals-

Right Field- Juan Encarnacion replacing Larry Walker, Encarnacion helps us get younger in the OF and as long as he can put up numbers around what he did last season should be a solid addition

Left Field- Lose Reggie Sanders so position is between So Taguchi, Larry Bigbie, and John Rodriguez. Reggie was getting old but still produced, once again we get younger at this spot but tough to judge how things work out until we know who the starter is.

Second Base- Losing Grudz stings more on defense than offense due to he has one of the stronger arms for a second baseman. Junior Spivey and Hector Luna will fight for the job.

RH Reliever- Subtract Julian Tavarez add Braden Looper, who knows on this one, both have their cold streaks but Looper will need to cut down on the gopher balls.

LH Reliever- Subtract Burger King add Ricardo Rincon, King wasn't very good last season but then again Rincons stats aren't exactly great.

Other than that just some new faces for the bench. I wouldn't say we improved the team but I don't think we slipped too much either, pretty much maintained.

Anthony Reyes into the rotation in Matt Morris spot also should be interesting to see, Reyes looked pretty good in spot action last year and has a lot of potential.

Also the addition of Ponson could allow us to deal Marquis down the road to fill a hole if needed (and of course thats only if Ponson has really rededicated himself and is pitching well).

Bridge to the closer= I'd say Eyre and Howry are a huge improvement.

MIF= Ronny Cedeno deserves a chance with the numbers he is putting up in Winter Ball, but Walker/Perez at second isn't great.

5th Starter= Glendon Rusch might have to be it. With Wood being injured, Jerome Williams could be the guy at the beginning of the year.
