    Baez and Lugo To METS

The New York Post is reporting this deal is very close. I belive Seao or Heileman or both would go to D-Rays. I can't belive the Met's would do the deal without tying up Baez, since he is in his walk year. If the Met's could give up just one pitcher it would be a steal.

They are doing that purely to be able to put together a better package for Manny.

That was my first thought as well, but I think Heilman is one of the guys the Red Sox would want in any potential deal. The big problem with the rumors between the Red Sox and Mets so far is that the Red Sox wouldn't be getting anyone that fills an immediate need. Lugo and Baez, although I'm not enamored with either of them, at least fill needs.

Why would the Red Sox have any use for Heilman? If there is anything they have a surplus of, I would think it is starting pitching.

Minus wells and probably Arroy/Clement from their pitching, because there's no way Wells will be here come the season, and I'm pretty sure Arroyo or Clement will be dealt to try and get an OF...and you cans ee why they need some SP. Plus, Schilling and Wakefield are both almost done.

Like Longhorn said, a lot of their starting pitching is in trade talks. Wells will be traded. They will unload Clement, if possible and Arroyo is the only one who will get a decent player in return so he might get traded as well. Also, Heilman was a reliever for much of last year. Guys who can start or come out of the pen are always good to have.

Wierd, cause my first reaction was "Oh thank God, now we can't trade Marte in a horrific deal with the D-Rays!"

If the Mets were going to make a run at Manny, you have to think they're more than 50% confident that those guys would entice the Sox...especially parting with Heilman, because they really don't need either of those players. Milledge would still be the centerpiece, but getting a potential closer and a shortstop in the package could solve some real problems. If that deal ever went down, I'd expect the Sox to start talking to LA about JD for Wells. We'd also have Clement and Bronson available to try and get Crisp, or Reed if need be. All those guys can play the corners since Lastings is advertised as a true centerfielder. I know Millege is very young, but I wonder if he has a higher upside than Coco...

I would think that Millege is projected to have a higher ceiling than Crisp, but Crisp has already done it at the Major League level and Millege hasn't so it's a crap shoot. If they could pull off that three way with the O's involved I'd be more excited, but I can't see that happening. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Rays officials said that no deal is imminent in today's Tampa Tribune.

                    MLB: Rays
                    NCAA: Michigan and Florida
                    NFL: 49ers
                    NHL: Lightning and Ducks
