JT Snow signs with Red Sox

Free agent first baseman J.T. Snow has reportedly agreed to terms on a one-year, $2 million contract with the Red Sox

Not a huge signing but it definitely fills a hole. He'll provide a solid LH bat, and be a good defensive replacement for Youk.

Never did like him or think he was that good... but whatever they think will help them win another World Series is all good n' gravy for me!

Well his career is basically over, but he's definately a great defensive back up at first base.

Yup, he'll do exactly what we need him to. Defensive replacement, pinch hitter and get the occasional start vs RH pitching.

Well we pretty much got a poor man's Olerud, I'll take it though.

Just a small tidbit, J.T Snow has a .996 Fielding percentage, one point higher than Olerud's .995. Obviously Olerud has more chances, but just something sorta interesting.

Yep this is a nice "character" kind of signing. I always thought JT Snow was a good guy.

BTW the idea of a defensive 1B is something I find funny.

Certainly allows us to play Youk at 1B with a capable replacement in the late Innings. Not an amazing signing, but very solid.

lol. You wouldn't find it funny if your options the last few years were David Ortiz and Kevin Millar.

Eh, doesn't do anything for me. I don't expect him to last the whole year, especially if Youk proves himself a steady first baseman.

Unless the Red Sox trade for a 1B during the season Snow should last the whole season. Depending on whether or not the 4th OF (who ever that will be) hits left or right handed Snow will give the Sox a pretty decent left handed bat off the bench. What this signing does is pretty much guarentee that Andy Marte will start the season at AAA, with Snow and Youkilis at First and Mike Lowell at Third there will be no real playing time for Marte with the Sox (unless they trade Lowell, which is pretty unlikely).
Now if they could just fill the holes at SS and CF...

Oh I don't doubt that but defense at 1B is pretty much overrated IMO. I mean any 1B can develop into an adequate player there if they work hard enough. Just look at Carlos Delgado, when he first went to 1B his defense was pretty bad but he has developed into a solid, if not unspectacular 1B who can make a few plays here and there.

I think Carlos was the perfect example SPTO, but after seeing Miekcwitcz catch balls at first after 7 innings of watching Millar do it, I have come to appreciate 1B defense alot more recently.

JT is one of the best defensive first basemen in the game, and a monster vs righties, im sad to see him go...

I wouldn't necessarily go that far. He's had his ups and downs, and he's a great guy, no doubt. Everybody in San Francisco loved him. My family loved him. I never really did like him. Don't know why.

True, he is a great defensive 1B... unfortunately there aren't any designated fielders in the league.
