Re: Piazza to Yanks?
I sure hope not.
We already have a backup catcher, and we need a good glove to backup first base, not another player who can hit (maybe) and can't field.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

I'm hearing that he might be coming home to Philly. Not sure how I'd feel about that.Comment

Re: Piazza to Yanks?
I heard its either DH or backup to a 1B, because posadas contract states if he plays less then 81 games, he would get 12 million, something like that i read at mlb.com.
They said Phillips, bernie & giambi will be at DH alot. Then Stinette and posada at Catching.
IMO Piazza its better the Stinette, throw that guy away and put Piazza in.Last edited by JOEdellis; 01-24-2006, 09:47 PM.Comment

Re: Piazza to Yanks?
At this point in thier careers he'd probably be a better be a better DH than Bernie. I couldn't imagine Piazza being on the team without any position other than DH. They could easily dump Stinnent and then it would make more sense, still if your going to sign a name backup catcher mine as well go for Bengie.Yankees

Re: Piazza to Yanks?
Mike & The Mad Dog were saying today that there's no chance in hell it's going to happen.
But in the last few years I've decided they don't know their *** from their elbow.
Anyway, we absolutely 100% do not need Piazza. Keep him far away from the Bronx.
And Bengie Molina was the biggest-name FA catcher this offseason. He turned down the 3yr/$21 mil from the Mets cause he thought he would get better offers, baaaaaaaad move on his part.
And I'm sure Yankee fans would know him enough since he practically single-handidley ended our season last October."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

This is the article talking about teams interested in him (SD, TOR, PHI, NYY). I was about to start a new thread, but a few Padres fans at another message board said they heard Piazza is on his way to SD. Now I don't feel strongly about the Padres acquiring Piazza since Molina is still available, but from what I heard about Molina, he is willing to sit out a year if he doesn't get the contract he desires... so I think the Padres trying to squeeze out a one-year, 4 million dollar offer to him isn't going to make him budge (of course they never offered him that). I believe Piazza cost significantly less than what Molina is asking for and if you ask me, anything is better than having two career backups on your roster... right?
Piazza won't be a mind-blowing move, however, there is no right-handed hitter suitable to spell first base for Klesko/Gonzalez and Piazza is more of hitting threat than any of the catchers the Padres have competing for the starting job. However, his defense is downright atrocious as everyone knows and I think that's a key attribute a catcher has to possess in calling a game and playing in a ballpark like Petco Park.
Signing Piazza won't be the worst thing the Padres could do, but going into the season with the thought of three catchers on the roster since everyone was a backup (Mirabelli, Ross, Todd Greene) would be one of the biggest mistakes they can make.Comment
