    Will history repeat itself?

Think about it, everytime the Mariners get a new Japanese guy what happens?

Sasaki - ROY, they win AL West
Ichiro - ROY, they win Al West
    Kenji - ???

I still really don't understand the signing all that much. I'm assuming that he hasn't learned much English since he signed with the M's...and catcher is the one position where you have to be able to communicate verbally with others. What's he going to say when he walks out to the mound?

That said, I'm sure the voters will care less what kind of game he calls, as long as he puts up good offensive numbers he'll win ROY. I haven't gotten a chance to look at the other rookies yet though, so I don't know what kind of competition he has.

I'm expecting to see some strange things from him this year on the field, but not so many that it somehow inhibits his performance. The M's wouldn't sign the guy if they were expecting him or the team to have much of a problem communicating.

As a matter of fact, if Beltre starts to play more the way we expected him to, and Reed comes into his own the way most rookies do after their rookie year, hoping that Washburn performs the way we want him to, and a bunch of other stuff that's near impossible to predict let alone have happen actually happens, then history could indeed repeat itself.

Somehow I doubt it, though. The M's still don't have nearly a strong enough Starting Rotation. We have 2 starters we can rely on, and to use the word "rely" is to imply that we can rely on them having no higher (hopefully) than a 6.00 ERA, and then we have Meche, Piniero, Washburn, and Foppert.

Listen....there are at least a half dozen legitimate questions of ability for every one of about 20 of the 25 players on the team as it now stands...you really expect them all to perform well enough to help the M's win the AL West? That, sir, would be a bonafide Miracle. The M's still have a way to go to win much of anything.

All this coming from an M's fan.
