Twins hearing the "C" word again

I was listening to the radio here in Toronto and they had an interview with Minneapolis Star-Tribune collumnist Patrick Reusse and apparently MLB is preparing to contract not only the Twins but the Marlins as well.

This time it looks like MLB is doing this quietly as they don't want opposition to develop while they undertake their master plan for contraction.

    Here't the newspaper article

If there was a dispersal draft if that happened, I wouldn't be surprised if teams contemplated tanking the season for Joe Mauer and Johan Santana.

Nobody's contracting, stop getting your panties in a bunch. The owners are making so much money they don't even know what to do with it. There's no chance in hell that any team will be contracted by the time the current CBA expires. The union will NEVER allow it to happen.

The latest Minnesota Vikings news today, including scores, schedules, standings, player stats, game highlights, NFL coverage and more from U.S. Bank Stadium.

The agreement states the following: "The Clubs [management] shall have the right ... to reduce by as many as two the number of Major League Clubs effective for the 2007 championship season."

According to the document, the clubs must notify the players of any decision to cut teams effective for 2007 no later than July 1, 2006. The owners also must deliver a tentative schedule at that time, thus revealing the names of the teams to be eliminated.

The players have agreed in this basic agreement not to take up a National Labor Relations Act challenge to contraction. They do have the right to bargain the effects. The best guess is the players would wind up with more players on the big-league rosters -- say 27, not 25, during the season, and 43 not 40 on the protected list.
        ----------

A court ruling in 2002 prevented contraction by stating the Twins could not back out of their Metrodome lease. The Twins have been operating under year-by-year leases since that ruling. Another court ruling last week stated that the Twins are not obligated to play in the Metrodome after 2006.

So with no legal opposition from the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission or the MLBPA, the Twins could very easily be contracted.

Wow why wouldnt they contract the Devil Rays or Rockies or some other team that doesnt have history, talent or a decent future? I am guessing Pohlad is doing this and that they are trying to use this to further the process of getting their stadium.

Thank you bender_over for the coraboritive info.

Bergie, the big reason why the Twins are being targeted (don't forget the Marlins are being targeted too. Hmmm huge fire sale then contraction the next year ) is because of Bud Selig's relationship and promise to Carl Pohlad.

They have long lease's to their ballparks. I don't think the Twins lease with the Metrodome is long. Getting a new BP guaratees a team at least 30 years without having to worry about contraction or relocation.

Just look at the Brew Crew.

Yeah I know about their damn deal. Pohlad is my public enemy #1 and I could honestly care less of what happens to the man. He is a complete moron that really needs to get rid of the team. His sons are just as idiotic I think. We really need a new stadium AND owner.

I still see this as somewhat of a threat to push along a new stadium since it is a big topic in the news around here. A judge recently ruled that the Twins can go wherever they want if we dont have a stadium plan next year.
