Tom Glavine and the 300 wins

Sounds like the title to a book, eh? Probably a crappy book, but a book all the same.

Anyways, I'm wondering what everyone else is thinking about this subject. Glavine said a year or two ago that he was only going to stay on for a couple more years, and that he'd need 15 wins each year to get to 300. He is approximately 25 wins away, and if I'm correct, this was the last year he said he'd play? (I think?)

So obviously he's probably not going to break out and get 25 wins this year, but my question is:

Do you think that if he does well enough this season, say 15 wins, that he'll stay on another season and try for the 300 mark? I mean, you can't really get that close and just give up, can you? Especially if you're being productive enough. The thing is, Glavine is kindof a different breed of ballplayer, and it's almost like you never know what to expect from him.

So what does everyone else think? If he gets close enough, will he go for it? Or will he just quit regardless of how well he does?

I think it's unfortunate that he hasn't gotten more wins over the past two years as he's pitched pretty well. I expect him to stay for his 300th win barring an injury.

If he's an effective pitcher and has a good year I think he'll come back and go for 300. He may be the last person to do it for a long time so I think he'd want to get that distinction.

A guy like Glavine can always find work if he wants it. Heck, just look at the money that Jamie Moyer just got to stick around another year in Seattle. Pitching is so thin right now that lefties like him could easily pitch until they are 45.

But you're right. Glavine is cut from a different mold. While I can't say this for a fact, it does appear that he has some interests outside of baseball. With the offense that the Mets have this year, and assuming that he stays healthy, I'd be surprised if he wasn't able to get 13-16 wins this year.

If Glavine can get to about 10-12 wins away from 300 this season than i definitly think he would play next season, though maybe not as a Met. I could see Glavine maybe signing back with Atlanta to record the milestone, maybe even Baltimore since Leo Mazzone played a major part in Glavine's success. If the goal is in reach than he'll be back, but if he has a dismal season (and i don't think he will) than maybe he would not want to come back.

I don't think he retires until he gets 300, it might take 3 years though.

I think Tom Glavine doesn't want to be another Don Sutton, a pitcher that stuck around long after his expiry date just to get 300 wins. I think tho, if he has a good season without any major injury that he may pitch one more year for the milestone.

That sums up my thoughts pretty well.

i think if glavine goes 15-10, 13-13, 16-0, etc hell be back, heck he may be back reguardless and have no intentions what so ever of retireing anytime soon. going back to the brves after this year, is a very interesting concept. i wonder if the braves would take him back. in any way if the mets get rid of him, which i dont think they would do, cause they want him in their uni for win #300, hell find work elsewhere. prob on the cubs.

I read on the Braves Talk Forum: http://mb3.scout.com/fatlantabravesfrm1 that Glavine said next year the only teams he will consider playing for is the Mets or the Braves. I'm sure that is just talk because I'm sure he will take the best available offer, but I think he is planning on playing another season and should get his 300 win sometime in 2007.

If he does play next season I give the O's a 90% chance of picking him up due to the Mazzone factor.

I don't really see the Braves wanting to bring back a former part of their '90s pitching staff for the simple fact that they're clearly building a future with younger guys.

I believe he'll stay around for 300 as he will be the last pitcher to do so in the immediate future. It'll be a really long time until the next person does it, assuming someone else actually gets to 300.

Sadly I think Glavine would be the last guy to win 300 games. The way the game is set up these days a pitcher will need to be winning 20+ games for a loooong period of time. A pitcher would also need 20+ years to accomplish the feat.

I think 250 wins will be the new 300.

I think he'll stick round for 300, and I woudn't mind him coming back to the Braves to do it. I doubt Leo not being there will factor into it, honestly. Smoltz and Cox are still there...

I could see him maybe finishing up with the Red Sox, though, since he's from Mass...

I could see Glavine in Boston, especially if Schilling retires after this season.
