Phillies player talks about amphetamine use in MLB

    http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/14022257.htm

CLEARWATER, Fla. - There were times, as recently as last season, the Phillies player said, when he wanted the rush quickly. So he ripped open the capsule and poured the contents directly onto his tongue.

The image might sound startling, but inside a modern major-league clubhouse, it was not.

A couple generations ago, players swigged "red juice" when they needed a little pick-me-up. Over time, the energy booster became available in neat little capsules affectionately called "greenies."

"Speed," said the current Phillie, who asked not to be named, for fear of tarnishing his reputation. "It's bad for your cardio. It's unhealthy. But I did it."

He did it every day for the last few seasons, and so, he estimated, did half the position players in the big leagues.
Read the whole thing, it's pretty interesting. If his estimate is true and half the position players in the league were using almost daily last season, it's going to be interesting to see how players adjust to playing a 162-game grind without the use of uppers. It's also interesting to note that this new drug policy will change the way baseball has been played for more than 40 years, since these things were so widespread and accessible to players.

That would be my guess too.

Sully, if it were Lieby, that would just be sad.

Yeah, I know. I just remember seeing Lieby at a Dave Matthews concert with Mark Portugal back in '98. He had a beer in one hand, and a cigarette in the other. He looked trashed, and I know he likes to party.

          Burrell is another good guess.

Eh, I don't know. He hasn't been with the Phillies very long. Michaels looks like he's on natural speed sometimes. LOL I think Burrell and Lieberthal are likely candidates. It's a very interesting article. Makes me wonder about some Reds players...

Just about everyone used amphetamines in baseball up till this point.

Amphetamines are a bigger problem then how MLB makes it out to be. It's going to be interesting seeing how the players perform in the dog days of summer when their energy is being sapped by the heat and weariness of being on the road.

We could see a lot of big names being busted for taking them.
