Wow! Did you guys see Mike Schmidt on ESPN

He talk about steroids and saying it was the steroid era and that if he was playing today he might have taken them. To get the edge. He said he was under so much pressure. I was shocked hearing that from him, I thought he would be against all these players. He also talk about Pete Rose should be in the Hall. But never to be mention about being a Manager!

You guys know how I feel about the steroids lol.

But should Pete be in the Hall. I know the Hall for Baseball have a guideline you have to follow, like being a good role model and such. I think he should be in as player. I like what Mike said. What do you guys think?

Yeah I saw him say the same thing on that lame ESPN Classic show "Classic Now"...

As for Pete Rose - obviously this topic has been beaten to death. Personally, I wouldn't put him in. But you know, it's been nearly 20 years... at this point I honestly don't care that much anymore.

Yeah it is old! But I think he should be in for his playing day, but who knows.

I'm not surpirsed; I believe Schmidt has said something to that effect before. Doesn't surprise me though, at least he is honest.

As for Rose - no way he should be in the Hall. It's a clearly established rule that betting on baseball results in a lifetime ban. That includes the Hall, as a player, manager, coach, broadcaster, whatever. Maybe if Rose had some forward and said "Look I have a gambling problem and I need help" and worked to stop I would have sympathy. But the fact he did it, lied about it for so long (in the process questioning the integrity of Dowd and the others who investigated him) and even PROFITED off it (the 'Why isn't Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame?' ad campaign) to me means that he should continue to be banned.

That is some great points, I guess I just forgive to easy lol. It is still a tough one for me!

I've heard Schmidt say this before. At least he's honest about it. I mean look at Bonds, according to the book the only reason he took steroids is because he was jealous of the attention that Big Mac and Sammy Sosa were getting. I'm sure there's a lot of peer pressure and the need to perform well to use stuff like that.

As for Rose, look, there's been lots of bad characters in the Hall of Fame. Ty Cobb clobbered a fan in the middle of a game once for crying out loud! Yes betting is a sin in baseball but if there are ppl out there willing to have guys who actually broke the LAW in the HOF then I see no reason not to put in Rose.

Just put him in the HOF but keep him banned from managing or coaching.

I say no to Rose in the Hall. I worked in baseball for two years and everyday when I walked into the clubhouse I had to pass the giant sign which outlined the rules against betting and the punishment involved. Rose had to walk by the same sign. Baseball is a game of fluidity, but this is one thing that has stayed consistent throughout, you cannot bet on baseball. No one is above the game, no one is above the rules. One must take responsibility for their actions and take their punishment like a man. Rose has done neither (unless you count his feeble attempt when he was selling a book).
Overall satisfaction also makes the decline!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some people seem to think because Rose only bet on the Reds to win that it wasn't that bad. It is just as bad as betting on them to lose. Reason being-It's Friday and he bets on the Reds to win Saturday. He has many options to give him the best odds for a saturday victory. He can #1. Not put in a reliever in the friday game because he pitched thursday hence having him available for Saturday and stronger. #2. Push back a starting pitcher one day to Saturday who he knows is pitching well #3. Rest an important hitter on Friday to have him stronger on Saturday. In fact he has many options to give himself better odds for Saturday and while in essence he didn't bet for the Reds to lose friday he has compromised the game's integrity by hindering the abilty of a Friday win. So there is no way that he can be let in the HOF by manipulating his team for his own monetary gain and that's why he will never be allowed in by MLB and justifiably so.

There is no "but" here. He violated the single rule that results in a lifetime ban and did so knowingly. Its not that he isnt in because he is a bad guy, its because he broke that one rule-- end of story. You also cant allow players to end run this rule by allowing them in as a player. It has no value as a deterrent then.

Plus there is spillover. If he has a high rate of success when he bets then when he doesnt bet, it could be seen as a tip to bet against the Reds. A small circle of people would know this depending on who Rose and/or his bookie tells. But yeah, there is conceivably a ripple effect caused by his not betting.

Bingo. I'd put a murderer in the Hall before I put in a player who bet on baseball.
