How can people be so naive?

I was just looking at ESPN.com's Sportsnation poll, and the question was "Do you trust that the early HR leaders are not on performace enhancing supplements?"

    55% of America said "Yes".

That just confuses me. How can people be so naive to the fact that a majority of the league is on some kind of performance enhancing supplement? Even if it isn't steroids itself, do these people realize that the MLB does not test for human growth hormone, which is more dangerous than steroids and can have the same effect that steroids do?

I don't know if it's ignorance, or being plain oblivious, but people are just refusing to accept that a great majority of these players (in all sports) take as many supplements as they possibly can. Even that great new player on your "beloved" home team is probably on some kind of performance enhancing supplement.

These legal supplements together all amount to the same effect that steroids have. The difference is that steroids are ILLEGAL... but, in the end, does it really matter to the game of baseball what is illegal and legal if they both do the same thing?

People need to wake up and smell the roses - not everyone is honest. Taking away the steroid issue from JUST Barry Bonds doesn't mean that the problem is over. He's not the only player on the juice. Your beloved Big Papi's, Pujols', Manny's, etc. etc. are probably all on some kind(s) of performance enhancing drug just as much as the "All Evil Barry Bonds" is.

The performance enhancing drug issue is not over, and will not be over for a long time, even if Bonds retires.

As long as they don't test for HGH, you can bet on a majority of the top producers aren't clean.

The question is somewhat flawed. I mean to ask about supplements in general is one thing. I mean a heck of a lot of players use things like creatine which is legal but is a performance enhancer. However a lot of people are going to read it as illegal performance enhancers and base their vote off that.

I find it someone curious that you are going to admonish people for their assumptions and then come on here and name names for who you think are users. Ortiz, Pujols, Manny - these are some of the worst people you could name as potential users. There havent been prevalent serious whispers about any of them, all have been consistently great and Manny and Ortiz have had common career arcs (Pujols hasnt been around long enough to have one), and none have had the kind of injuries associated with steroid use. So what reason could you have for suspecting them? If you're going to accuse someone of being a cheater and illegal drug user you should have at least some shred of evidence beyond just that they are talented. There have been players are good, even better, than these guys before there were steroids to be used and it makes sense that there are still players who put up the kinds of numbers these guys do. Not every good player is on steroids, or anything else for that matter, and the fact they are among the best in the game should not be enough to implicate them.

And you know, the beloved players on my home team probobly are not using anything. Estimates ran at the 50% (high end) mark during the most rampant times of substance abuse of this kind. That number has almost certianly dropped today. Yes, some continue to use HGH or have switched to it, but the precieved decline also reduces pressure on players to use and this has almost certainly brought the percentage down as well.

Legality of course makes a huge difference. First off, there is a world outside of baseball, so if we're talking about US Law legality that is whole other issue. But legal suppliments do not have the same effects are steroids.

You come on here and blast people for being naive, yet it takes just as much naivity to assume all good players are on something simply by virtue of the fact that they're good. You ask people to wake up and smell the roses (which btw, is a mixed metaphor) because not everyone is honest, but at the same time you have to realize not everyone is dishonest either.

I'm sure Sheffield is on something. Too bad he's never been outright caught doing it.

I think most of the HR leaders right now are clean (well as clean without testing for HGH)
