    Lance Berkman talks steroids

Berkman's usually a pretty quiet guy, so it'll be interesting to see if these remarks hold true over the course of the season. During the early stages of the season, hitting is usually ahead of pitching. But with all the big-name pitchers who are struggling right now, it's something to at least consider.

In that story, McTaggart makes mention of Lance Berkman's belief that some of the strong offensive numbers around the majors are due to pitchers getting off steroids.

"You knew there was going to be a day of reckoning," Berkman said Wednesday while McTaggart and I chatted with him.

At first it seemed as though Berkman was joking, as usual. But he was somewhat serious, even pointing out that more pitchers than hitters have been suspended for using steroids.

"Everybody wants to talk about the hitters being juiced," he said. "Nobody even really thinks about the pitchers. Before they were throwing 95-mph, but now they're throwing 90. It's going to be a whole different feel."
    Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.
Dash: [muttering] Which is another way of saying no one is.

He's right about the velocity factor. Primarily Freddie Garcia who could barely hit 85 in the Toronto series two weeks ago.
