    "Significant Changes" coming for Royals

Royals owner David Glass promises changes after getting off to worst start in the A.L.

An angry David Glass vowed Friday that "significant changes" are coming soon to the woeful Kansas City Royals.

With 120 losses not out of the question buy or sell these "changes" effecting the outcome of the Royals season for the better.

"But it hasn't been working," Glass said. "Cosmetic changes don't help. We're going to have to figure out how to change the direction the team has gone this year. We've got to do something more significant than cosmetic changes."

One of those changes may have to be firing GM Allard Baird, who i think wants to be fired. He even said he was surprised he wasn't given the axe when they fired Tony Pena last season.

Buster Onley was saying it sounds like it'll be more F.O and management changes, compared to Players...

although, with new management come new players.

Maybe he's figured out that firing managers doesn't do much when the talent on the field is awful.

Too bad the Pirates haven't figured that out yet.

I've been debating this exact thing with a Pirates fan on another site for nearly a year now. He claimed Lloyd McClendon was the reason for all the losses the past few years for the Pirates (never mind the manager before Lloyd lost as well and Leyland lost his last few years in Pittsburgh). He thought Jim Tracy would get the Pirates a minimum of 15 more wins this year. Now that the Pirates are off to their worst start since 1955 (8-22, soon to be 8-23), he's still saying the problem was the former manager and still believes the Buc's will win 86 games this year.

Ugh.... Sorry for the off topic rant, but I can't stand when people blame everything on the manager. It's all about the talent in the long run.

If that's not the definition of delusional, I don't know what is. Not that there's anything wrong with being a homer, but you need to keep it within reason.

Isn't George Brett a minority owner? I wouldn't mind if he was put in the GM spot. That is, if he actually wants it. I say bring back as many people with connections with the glory days of the Royals and give them some power to change things around.

It would kill two birds with one stone:

                  1) have a meaningful shakeup

                  2) gives the changes some credibility and fan support (at least initially)

Off topic, but interesting. Living in SoCal, i have seen alot of Jim Tracy the last several years and i was never impressed with him as a Manager, i think a lot of Tracy's success with the Dodgers came from being in a terribley weak NL West division. His current Pirates team is probably the best team the Pirates have had since 1997, with the exception of the young starters there are a lot more veterans on the Pirates this year than recent years...and they're off to their worst start in 51 years. Tracy's laid back attitude and general lack of aggresion is not going to help the Pirates win, if anything this team may have been better off with McClendon.

Back to topic: adding George Brett to the Royals front office would be a huge addition, not just for the team but for the fans as well. Brett was always a great competitor on the field and could bring that intensity back to the Royals.

the Significant Change the Royals need is to get rid of owner David Glass. The dude takes all the money he receives from revenue sharing and pockets 99% of it, instead of flooding most of into the team/stadium like he should. This is just a smokescreen to keep the heat off his a$$. New gm, new manager, new players won't matter until they get an owner who's willing to drop some coin.

I agree. I would definitely support George Brett in the GM position. I think that his experience and intensity could get the job done.

Allard Baird is a tough guy to be mad at, though. He is very passionate about making this team better — he truly does care. He personally answers almost every fan e-mail he receives. When my family went to San Diego a few years ago to see the Royals play the Padres, my dad and I were able to talk to him for a while (Allard was observing warmups from the field). He's such a great guy, but his performance leaves the Royals no choice.

I really hope we can turn this thing around somehow. It's so tough being a small market team, but that excuse can only go so far.

major changes: Owner realizes "hey, i have to stop stuffing my own pockets & put the money into the team".

John Schuerholz has connections to the glory days. He's the guy they need, not G. Brett. I agree that guys like Frank White, George Brett and Co. should be involved with the team since nostalgia is all this team has going for it but they need a real GM and bad.

Yeah, but let's be realistic Schuerholz is 65 and I don't think he'd want to go and operate a team that is being run on a shoestring budget.
