Midway Games announced today that MLB Slugfest 20-03 has outsold all other PS2 baseball games to date, placing it as the best-selling PS2 baseball game of 2002.

Since its launch in mid-summer (July), Midway's hilarious arcade-style baseball romp has performed extremely well in the baseball venue. From January through November 2002, MLB Slugfest 20-03 outsold all competing PS2 baseball games, reported NPD Funworld, which tracks sales data for the videogame industry.

In the month of July 2002 alone, MLB Slugfest 20-03 outsold all PS2 games (of any genre) by a nearly two-to-one margin [Ed Note: few games were launched in July 2002]. It outsold all other baseball games in that same month by a five-to-one ratio, including 3DO's High Heat MLB Baseball, Acclaim's All-star Baseball and EA's Triple Play Baseball, according to NPD Funworld.

"MLB SlugFest 20-03 combines Midway Sports signature over-the-top gameplay with real baseball aspects, delivering a one-of-a-kind videogame for next-generation systems," said Helene Sheeler, vice president of marketing. "We attribute the success of MLB SlugFest 20-03 to the game?s appeal to both longtime fans of the sport and action gamers alike."

Additionally, On NBC's national "Today Toy Test 2002," MLB SlugFest 20-03 was the top sports videogame with kids and their parents.

I've got $5 that says it didn't outsell the others.... maybe from the month of July to now it has, but that's because most people who bought baseball games did so in March and April. Overall, though, not a chance it is the baseball sales king.

NPD Top 20 Video Games 7/31/02
Here are the top 20 best selling video game titles for the month of July 2002, according to the market analysts at NPDFunworld.

July is always a slow month for new releases—a fact brutally reflected in this month's top 20, which may as well have come from April or May. There're only three new games on the list this time around, and two of 'em are sports titles: NCAA Football 2003 from EA and, surprisingly enough, MLB Slugfest 20-03 from Midway. The only other new title is Bandai's Digimon World 3, which made a late jump to the list as old standbys like Grand Theft Auto 3 and Halo sagged a bit in sales. (We're sure the $20 price tag helped things a bit, too.)

August should provide a more interesting list to talk about, what with Mario and the rest of Nintendo's lineup popping up near the end of the month. See you then.

B: They were not even the top selling PS2 sports game TO COME OUT IN JULY!
C: You can't outsell everything 2-1 when you are not in first.

The problem is that IGN (where the original post quotes from)doesn't post press releases, they interpret them...and they misinterpreted this one. The original press release from Midway specifies *competing* games, not "of all genres."

IGN actually trying to "interpret" something is good for a few laughs. They copy and paste their reviews, yet the one time where a copy and paste would be fine... Well you get the point.

well, outsold all others baseball games. this game is very fun, is not a sim, but very fun. So, could be the best selling, why not?
