White Sox interested in Tori Hunter?

Read this article this morning in the Chicago Suntimes and this would be an interesting mix. The way I feel about Tori Hunter coming to the White Sox is the same way I felt about Dennis Rodman coming to the Bulls. I hated him when he played for the other team but would take him in a heart beat to play for my team.

But is it possible for the Twins organization to just hand us the AL Central Division on a silver platter by giving us Hunter? Let's face it, the White Sox get Hunter with the team we have winning the division is just a matter of time. This wouldn't sit too well with the two teams that would be chasing us all year in Cleveland and Detroit. We get Hunter that means they'd have to do blockbuster deals to get even.

Any Twins fans want to chime in and explain why would they entertain the thought of handing us Hunter and the AL Central?

Not a Twins fan, but I'm guessing they feel like they aren't going to compete in the Central this year, Torii Hunter makes $10 million this year and they aren't going to pick up his option for next year, so why not get something for him. Not to mention, he really isn't that good.

Well, I'd take him right now over Brian Anderson. Not to mention we'd get back that defensive rover in center field like we had with Aaron Rowand last year.

And just a quick cheap shot: He has more homers and RBI's than Manny Rameriez.

Which means?? Just because I'm a Red Sox fan doesn't mean every thread I post in needs to involve the Red Sox.

No doubt, Torii Hunter is a good defensive fielder and he does have some pop, but he's a hacker and not a guy I'd want in my lineup. He may be better than Brian Anderson, but I can understand why the Twins would want to move him when he's ridiculously overpaid. The problem now for the White Sox is the Yankees are sure to have some say in where he ends up.

To think that acquiring Torii Hunter will make you guys locks as the ALC champs is laughable.

It does make some sense from a Twins perspective if they feel they will not get anything in return for Hunter. His contract expires after this season, with a 2007 club option worth $12M.

However, given that the Twins are trying to get a new ballpark approved, is it really in the best interests of the team to move arguably the face of their team (Yes, I know Santana exists)? Could moving Hunter perhaps have a negative effect in terms of getting the new park approved by legislature and taxpayers?

Furthermore, moving him to the White Sox would be quite poorly received by the fan base. It's tough to sell a trade of one's best player to a competitor within the division.

Looking at it from a Yankee perspective, it makes some sense as well for somebody to step in and replace Matsui. The problem is: Hunter is a better center fielder than Damon; who plays CF? Tough call there. I imagine either one is capable and willing enough to play LF. The other thing is, what happens when Matsui gets back? Do they use Matsui or Sheffield as a DH at that point? That makes some sense, and additionally would improve their OF defense.

If you look at the landscape of the AL Central as it is now I'd say we'd still be the favorites to win it. Cleveland is having some issue with pitching and bullpen. Detroit might be the most competitive but I feel our picthing is much better than theirs. So us getting Hunter boost our defense because that's what keyed our championship run last year. I think for Detroit OR Cleveland to overtake us as the teams are now they's have to get another quality starter.

Your right. But somehow when I talk about the White Sox outside of team thread you seem to be in the middle of most of them. When ever I start talking about how good the White Sox are to complaining about how they don't get respect you seem to chime in. Don't know what that means but you seem more worried about how 'whinny' White Sox fan feel about their media attention. If the White Sox being good bothers you then just say it. Cause I'll tell you, the year the Red Sox won the World Series bothered me just as much.

I definitely think the White Sox are the favorites, even without Hunter. Saying that adding Hunter makes them a lock is silly though, because he really isn't that good.

Also, I have nothing against the White Sox, I just don't like their whiny fans.

Yeah, and what's your point? I'm not gonna turn this into a White Sox vs. Red Sox thread, but Manny's also hitting .310 and Hunter's hitting .268.

LOL @ putting Torii's offense in the same sentence as Manny's.

The odds of the Twins picking up Hunter's 12 million dollar option for next season is roughly 0. And quite frankly, the Twins' chances of making the playoffs is about the same. It's in the team's best interests to deal him and would have no impact on getting the stadium passed at this point.

While i think the Twins will probably trade Hunter at some point, i don't see it being to the White Sox. I can't see the Twins trading their best position player to they're biggest rival and helping the Sox to another division title, they may as well throw Santana in the deal while they're at it.

The idea of Torii Hunter on the White Sox makes me sick to my stomach. I would rather have them trade him to the Yankees than the White Sox. I really like Torii and I would really miss him if we do move him. I do have to understand that we do have to retool a little bit to compete again. If only we would have went after a big time hitter when our window was open.

Hunter will be traded at some point this year, but it won't be to the White Sox. It will happen around the trading deadline, and it certainly won't happen within the division.
