    Lidge out as Houston closer

    ...for now, at least.

So far it looks like Albert Pujols should be arrested for MURDER.

Wasn't it a year ago that he was considered one of the elite closers in the game?

Lidge is like Byung-Hyun Kim. Bad moments have screwed him.

Or it could have something to do with his awful mechanics.

Man, they are horrible. I wouldn't be surprised if he has an arm injury he didn't tell anyone about.

This shouldn't last long at all, unless his replacement is lights out.

Well pitching in non save situations may help Lidge get his confidence back. He pitched well in a 12-2 win, a perfect inning in the 6th lol. Angers me though when I picked up Lidge and Fransico Cordero expecting them to rack up ALOT of saves, but coco failed completely much worse then Lidge, atleast in lidges struggles he got 11 saves. It mentions in there Lidge would close out a game if Qualls and Wheeler had already pitched in it...

Closers often burn-out rather quickly, which just makes guys live Rivera and Hoffman all the more impressive.

Just shows how hard it is to find good relief pitching. Guys who were good now suck and guys who sucked randomly become good. Very few guys are actually consistenly good throughout thier whole careers.

I don't think people understand why he is been relived of duty. It's not blowing 3 saves when you have 11 thats bad it's the fact that he has walked 16 guys that has lead the manager to this decision. He lead NL in saves...

i told my roommate after that series that houston had to change him because looking back at history most closers do not bounce back after blowing up in the playoffs so i thought it would ne smart for them to trade him and move on ASAP

That and his 6.11 ERA...even in his saves, he's giving up hits and runs, which isn't good.

Re: Lidge out as Houston closer

"What’s wrong with Brad Lidge? Lidge isn’t suffering from post-Pujols syndrome. Like most closers and like most pitchers with violent mechanics, he’s going through a down period after a dominant period. Some come back, some don’t and there’s no way to tell where he's headed at this stage. Lidge’s injury history is a negative, though he has always come back effectively. The Astros replace closers better than anyone--ask Billy Wagner or Octavio Dotel--and have two ready replacements in Dan Wheeler and Chad Qualls. At best, Lidge has plenty of time to straighten things out. At worst, we have another data point in the argument for Mariano Rivera being the best closer of all time; no one else has done what he’s done for as long." from baseballprospectus.com

This worries me, I guess i'll still keep Lidge in fantasy and drop another pitcher for J.J. Putz since he has been getting nod for mariners. It would be dumb to give up hope on Lidge who was a top 10 pick for me.

Wow. I havent been following too closely. I thought he was going to be a top level guy for a long time with that nasty slider and high 90's fastball. That homer must have killed his confidence.

As long as his arm is still sound, I think he'll be fine...
