The Blue Jays Middle Infield Situation

We have the worst MIF in the AL East. Here's the stats for AL East Shortstops: (I sorted them by best OPS)

Team G AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BA OBP SLG OPS
    Baltimore 41 166 30 62 5 0 10 97 29 .373 .411 .584 .995
    Yankees 38 152 32 54 10 2 5 83 30 .355 .446 .546 .992
    Toronto 39 146 23 37 9 0 2 52 16 .253 .300 .356 .656
    Boston 38 125 11 26 7 0 1 36 13 .208 .297 .288 .585
    Tampa Bay 40 146 20 27 6 0 3 42 8 .185 .227 .288 .515

Now for the AL Second Basemen

Team G AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BA OBP SLG OPS
    Yankees 38 148 20 47 9 0 2 62 16 .318 .357 .419 .776
    Baltimore 41 163 18 45 8 1 1 58 17 .276 .337 .356 .693
    Boston 38 168 20 47 10 0 1 60 18 .280 .320 .357 .677
    Tampa Bay 40 148 14 30 8 0 3 47 19 .203 .267 .318 .584
    Toronto 39 135 13 26 7 1 0 35 9 .193 .222 .259 .481

    Team SS 2B
    Baltimore Tejada Roberts
    Boston Gonzalez Loretta
    New York Jeter Cano
    Tampa Lugo/Perez Cantu/Wigginton
    Toronto Adams/McDonald Hill

Tejada, Jeter and Lugo are all proven veterens offensively and defensively while Gonzalez and Perez are both proven defensively. That Leaves Adams and McDonald. McDonald is a veteren but his expertise is defense.

Only Loretta is proven at 2B while all the others have had one good season. So far everyone has come through with another good season but Hill and Cantu (who's on the DL)

    There are many posible options:
1)Keep going with our present Middle Infield and hope they start producing
2)Switch Adams to 2B and Hill to SS.
3)Play McDonald more solely because of his Glove
4)Try to find and in house solution
    5)Try to trade for one

As for #1 I don't really see any improvement in the 2 at the moment and I think time the streach run they're going to have to start looking at some other possibilites

It doesn't look like Gibbons feels like moving Adams to a new position at this point of the season so this isn't very probable.

Gibbons is already using #3 to some effect as Johnny Mac played all 3 games against Tampa on the weekend.

He's hitting just a bit worse that Adams but with a better glove. #4 is most intriging to me as there are many possibilities. Gregg Zaun, Frank Catalanotto and Troy Glaus have all played the MIF at some point of their carrers. Albeit Zaun has only play 3 inning of 2 games at 2B so he's deffenently not an option. As for the Cat and Glaus neither of them have played the MIF since 2002. Catalanotto seems most probable to move back to the Infield at 2B as he has played 155 career games at that, his natural position. Glaus has only played 10 games at SS, not starting any of them. Catalanotto moving to 2B would also allow Hinske and Johnson more starts in the outfield. Or we could look in the minors for either Ryan Roberts or Sergio Santos. But, Santon is hitting only .227 with 1 HR in Syracuse while Roberts isn't doing any better with a .224 BA and only 1 HR.

As for the last option I'm not exactly sure who's available but it would be hard to give away Hill or Adams, seeing as they areboth still young with potential.

For me, I would like to see #4 or atleast #2 but #1 and #3 are most probable.

    Feel free to comment.

Re: The Blue Jays Middle Infield Situation

With the depth of our lineup, offense is really an unnecessary commodity. If anything, we may be trading Hillenbrand for better starting pitching. His 1-year contract wouldn't be too hard to trade, but it's way too early in the season for any team to call it quits right now and put their pitchers on the market.

And JP seems hellbent on keeping Adams as SS (obviously, he drafted Adams) . Though it's good to see Gibbons show some backbone and playing MacDonald from time to time. Adams=liability at SS. But I doubt the situation is changing anytime soon, especially as I said, pitching is our concern right now with AJ out for the near future.

If I had to pick a choice, I'd probably go with 3. Playing MacDonald full time at SS would bolster the defense and take the Batista-esque Adams out.

But if we keep playing Adams and Hill, they need to switch position. Hill's arm is being wasted at 2B.

And I thought the Twins' left side of the infield was horrible with Batista and Castro. I was going to post their numbers in here as a comparison, and they're bad don't get me wrong, but they're not THAT bad. Wow.

It's sad that we're letting such a good middle infield go to waste.

Despite Adams being awful on the field, there's no way I would start Johnny Mac full time. Hill's AB's are more damaging to the team than Adam's work in the field.
Hill has been worthless at the plate outside of his first 2 months last season.

The Jays should have swapped positions for Hill and Adams in the off-season. There's no chance they're going to do that now since the season already started.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the off-season though.

Re: The Blue Jays Middle Infield Situation

You have to go all the way to single A Dunedin to find a Jays minor league middle infielder with a BA. over .250 (SS Ryan Klosterman-.259) so offense is not a strong suit throughout the organization. aside from Roberto Alomar the Jays have never really had strong offensive middle infielders so this is nothing new.
Adams does appear to be showing signs of improvement at the plate-hitting .297 in the month of may (hit .225 in april). As for Aaron Hill, if his Average continues to drop (though he is hitting .200 in may, up from .195 in april) then maybe they will need to send him down for a while.

The downside of playing Catalanotto at 2B is that he has not played there since 2002, and he only started 15 games there that year.
