The man responsible for the Cubs 2003 playoff disaster calls it quits

    Alex Gonzalez is retiring.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?...mlb&id=2452958

Most Cubs fans likes to blame Bartman for the 2003 NLCS game 6 catastrophy but if anyone can recall the real reason why the Cubs couldn't make it out of the inning was Alex Gonzalez drop a routine inning ending double play right after the Bartman incident. Gonzalez should have been the guy who Cubs fans should have gotten on and not Bartman.

Dont tell Cubs fans where to focus blame. It varies but its too all or nothing with Bartman. Too many people say it was all his fault and too many people say he had nothing to do with it. The reality is that it would be ignorant to suggest that Bartman didnt have anything to do with it. The Bartman incident was the first of a series of events that undid the Cubs. But youre right in saying that Gonzalez shouldnt have booted the ball and Prior should have become unravelled and Dusty should have visited the mound to try to allow them to regroup but its ignorant to say Bartman had nothing to do with it. In baseball when you give the other team extra outs it often snowballs. This happens with many/most teams and to suggest the Cubs should have been exempt is also naive.

I wonder who Cub fan blames 1984 on? That was an epic meltdown at an even greater degree than what happened in the Bartmen incident.

No one around here locally blames him, thing is though everytime they show the "disaster clip", they show his fumble first.

It wasn't fan interference (by rule), and if Bartman had sat back and watched it fall, there were still five hands ready to touch it. By no means is it that man's fault one bit. It is funny how last night's Family Guy had something about it, though.

I didn't realize Gonzalez was anywhere near on the verge of retiring. He can't be THAT old, can he?

And everyone of those people would have risked infamy. If you reach out and interfere with the flight of the ball that could potentially be caught, you take your chances...you get what you get.

Again, its ignorant to try to say this had nothing to do with what followed. Anyone who has played baseball can tell you stories of long innings that start because they gave the team extra outs.

Just remember that, by rule, he did not interfere... and that's all that you have to say.

I'd blame the curse over Bartman any day of the week (and twice on Sunday), and I don't believe in superstitions.

Thats because sympathy has displaced rationality.

Actually what is often forgotten in all this is that in game 1 Dusty put in that kiss of death, Guthrie in the 10th immediately after Sosa tied the game in the 9th with a HR. Of all the people to put in, he had to pick THE WORST reliever. This managerial debacle is often forgotten.
