    Steinbrenner Growing Forgetful

Steinbrenner, nearly 76 years old, has grown chronically and increasingly forgetful. He forgets names and faces. And almost everyone he regularly deals with, especially Yankee business intimates, knows it.
Several of those intimates regard the continued quoting of Steinbrenner - and continued pursuit of quotes from him - as "cruel" and "unfair."
"He just can't be held accountable for what he says these days," said one. "And anyone who quotes him on any issue or tries to read things into what he says is not playing fair, not applying common sense. That A-Rod thing the other night was a perfect example."
Last week, Steinbrenner was quoted as mocking Alex Rodriguez for an open-the-doors error against the Red Sox. By referring to Rodriguez as, "the third baseman," Steinbrenner was widely portrayed as being sarcastic, attaching a generic label to his star third baseman as a means of tweaking him.<!--OAS Middle-->

"George simply forgot his name," said one of Steinbrenner's charges, a fellow who has both covered and worked for Steinbrenner.

    And from a NYTimes article:
Although the Yankees repeatedly deny that the 75-year-old Steinbrenner has any health problems or is even experiencing aging deficiencies, he has exhibited difficulty recognizing people. Recently he did not know Reggie Jackson when he saw him, and earlier in the season he passed me in the Yankee Stadium press box without knowing who I was. We have known each other for more than 30 years.
There's been a lot of speculation about his health the last few couple of years.

He's defiently not the same Boss who is going to explode when the team struggles.

Interesting stuff. I guess it was only a matter of time. Who would be in line to take over if he stepped down? Does he have children that are in the business?

His son in law Steve Swindal will take over. I believe he has 1 or 2 sons who are involved too.

Man....it sounds like he may be getting alzheimers.

Oh and i've heard his Son-in-Law is going to slash the budget significantly once he fully takes over. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out in NYC.

A return of the late '80's early '90's Yankees. I'm sure thats what Yankee fans want to see.

Ever since he collapsed at that funeral (was it Johnny Unitas's), he's seemed very shaky. Even in that interview with Michael Kay he did last year he seemed very forgetful. I was thinking Alzheimer's too.

It was also strange that Centerstage is usually in front of a live audience, and for him they did it in an office with no one else there.

Where did that rumor come from? I hear this from all kinds of people but I never hear/see it from a semi-reliable source.

Anyway, George is probably just a figurehead by now. I assume he'll keep his position until his dying day though.

It was Otto Graham's funeral... I've heard rumblings of Alzheimer's too, and it will be interesting to see how everything plays out if he has to eventually relinquish control of the franchise.

I've heard and read about Swindal wanting to slash the budget, but I think if they are managed right, the Yanks can be competitive with a reasonable budget... They just have to stop trading valuable young talent for overpriced stars, and get their farm system back to stockpiling young talent.

I don't know about the others but if you look up Swindal's name here you'll find a thread where it was announced he would take over. In the article in said thread it was mentioned that Swindal would slash the budget.

                        Re: Steinbrenner Growing Forgetful

God forbid if the Yankees payroll is slashed to "gasp" 100 millon. I used to be a Yankees fan but in the last decade any success thay have seems so fake because it has to be done with a payroll that's twice as much as any other team most times.

Steinbrenner's been suffering from Alzhiemer's for several years now, I've heard this a few times from some media types that I talk too from time to time. That's why he's been seldom interviewed the last couple of years. It's pretty much known by everyone in baseball and he's worsening rapidly. By this time next year he will not be seen in public at all and hasn't had day to day control of the team for quite awhile now.
