Will Daniel Cabrera ever "get it"?

He is striking out more than a batter an inning, but he is almost giving up a walk an inning as well.

    Some statlines:
    April 7th - 1.1 IP, 3 H, 7 ER, 1 K, 7 BB
    April 12th - 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 10 K, 9 BB
    April 17th - 7 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 6 K, 1 BB

He has great stuff but very limited control. A 4.17 ERA is pretty solid but his 1.70 WHIP is just awful.

What do you guys think? He is still young, is he going to become a dominant starter?

I think he's going to be a 2 and 7 guy meaning that he will sometimes pitch 7 innings allowing only 2 runs or 2 innings and allowing 7 runs.

He just doesn't seem to have the intestinal fortitude to get out of jams IMO.

Certainly seems like he could be VERY good if he could ever get that control, but he just hasn't been able to so far this season.

      Definition of inconsistency.

If he does "get it", it could possibly be Leo's top prize...and that's saying something.

He's going to get it, I really belive that. He just needs some more time with Leo. Missing spring training hurt him in that regard. His stuff is NASTY. It has to be the best in baseball, at least up there. Noone with stuff that good will struggle for long. I really think he's going to figure it out, remember he's only 25. I see a 20 win season, possibly a Cy Young, in his near future.

The drive is there, he is willing to take Leo's advice and get better, that's the key. Leo's being good with him also. For example, after a D-Rays game where he walked 9 and struck out 10 in 5 innings, Leo asked "Daniel, how many runs did you give up?". He said "none", Leo followed with "that's all that matters". I have faith in Daniel, although my faith in Bedard is dwindling.

Rick Ankiel never got "it". "It" being control. Look what's happened to him. Cabrera has talent, no doubt about it, but you can't teach control, even if you're Leo Mazzone. Sorry but Cabrera will never be more than a middle of the road starter. Even during his best outings, he still walks way too many batters.

What about great pitchers like Sandy Koufax, Randy Johnson, Bob Gibson, and Nolan Ryan? They all had great stuff but struggled with control early on in their careers also and went on to eventually become all-time greats who didn't walk many batters at all.

I'm not saying that Daniel Cabrera will be as good as these guys (probably won't even be close) but he definatly has a chance of being a great pitcher one day under Leo Mazzone.

Cabrera certainly has nasty stuff, and if Leo can get his control problem fixed...Baltimore will have the ace they've been looking for.

The biggest problem with Cabrera is that he rattles to easily. If one thing goes wrong for him at any point in the game he comes apart. If Mazzone can fix Cabrera and get him to keep his emotions in check, maybe Cabrera could be something.

Daniel Cabrera will win more than one CY Young award. You heard it here first.

move him to Closer and you have potential to have one of the best closers in the game..

Wow... i'm not even sure if I should be excited or laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of this quote. But man, I hope you're right.

Not with his current control problems.

I don't see it. There's something about him and watching him pitch that makes me believe he'll never reach a level of consistency with his location. Therefore, he'll have little chance to be as dominant as his stuff indicates he should be.

Regarding Mazzone, I'm still not sure I buy the pitching "genius" label that many thrust upon him. I don't think ATL's staff is doing very well this year, but neither is Baltimore's (have to look for the stats later).

Well, you have to keep in mind that 4 of the 5 original starters missed nearly all of Spring Training due to the WBC. The only pitcher we had the whole time was Benson, and he's been pitching very well. All of the pitchers have improved as of late, even Rodrigo Lopez. I think we'll begin to see real results after the all-star break.
