How did Brian Roberts hit 18 HRs last year?

I'm not suggesting HGH or roids, or anything like that...But this guy blasted 18 last season, and he has zero this year.

Granted he did hit something like 9 or 10 of those the first month of the season, but still. In his previous seasons before 2005, he had 4 HR, 5 HR, 1 HR, and 2 HR.

So, was 2005's power surge just a complete fluke?

I put him on my fantasy team this year, so his numbers were bound to drop.

since Brob is my fav player right now, I feel like i have to defend him before this thread gets out of hand.

I do believe his 18 HR's last year IS an abberation. he's not a power hitter by any means. 10-12 HR's tops in any given season. He IS however, a 40ish doubles, 5-8 triples/year guy. he's fast, has a quick bat, and can hit to all fields.

the reason (and i HOPE it's the real reason) that his power numbers are down this year is that he almost had his arm torn off last year with that play at Yankee stadium. for those that don't know, roberts was covering 1st on a bunt (or maybe a swinging bunt), and the throw and the runner got to 1st at about the same time. as roberts caught it, the runner ran right into roberts' arm, and he ended up dislocating his elbow and if i remember correctly, had a fracture in there as well (along with torn and stretched tendons and ligaments). it was thought that he'd miss the early part of this season, but through rehab, he was able to play from opening day which was considered a minor miracle.

now, like i said, i HOPE that it's the real reason. arm injury, wasn't able to lift weights during the offseason, thus his power numbers are down. but considering the state of steroids in Baltimore recently... well, i'm not going to speculate.

no clue... maybe the arm injury has killed his power.

Ohhhhh ya. I forgot about the arm injury. Thats why I stayed away from him on draft day.

He is currently on pace to hit 40 doubles, five triples, and believe it or not, 70 RBIs, (Knocking in Corey Patterson...)

The guy is a good hitter, I just think the arm injury slowed him down. Last season, the guy was unconscious to start the year; and in baseball, when you're hot, you're hot. He's still producing, but for smaller guys, power comes and goes in spurts, depending on pitches seen, hot streaks, etc. Hopefully he'll be able to return to last season's form, but I'm sure no Oriole-fan is complaining with his current production, either.

True. It seems like Roberts has been playing for awhile, (2001), but I guess you also have to consider that he hasn't been a full-time guy that long. He only had two full seasons (159 and 112 games) before last seasons breakout year, so maybe this year pitchers are starting to figure him out a little? Well, not figure him out, but just found out what pitches/placements he would go yard on.

He also started using those cyborg eye implants/contact lenses created by Nike and Baush & Lomb last year.

It's mainly the elbow injury. He still looks somewhat shaky batting right handed because of it.

My fantasy team MVP from 2005. What a tremendous draft pick in the 16th round. Obviously, I had no clue he would be a 5 category player in 2005, but man was he gigantic for my club. I <3 brob (circa 2005)
