Joe Mauer needs to play 3rd......

If this young stud keeps hitting the way he is, the Twins need to consider prolonging his career. Playing catcher beats up the knees too much and this kid looks like he might be a career .330 hitter.

The smart move would be to move him to third base and or play DH. He reminds me of a young Wade Boggs. Guys like this don't come along too often.

I bet back in 2003, Twins fans were wondering why Mark Prior wasn't in their starting rotation. Now they're like "thank god".

Mauer has played catcher for his whole career and he plays great defense. If you move him to 3rd (I don't understand why you would move him to DH) then who knows if he'll still play great defense. Also, who will play catcher for the Twins?

And yes the average is amazing but his power for now is below average for 3B. I say keep Mauer a catcher until he's in his 30's.

I'm not exactly saying right away. He already has one major knee surgery. He also isn't built like a Molina(take your pick) or a McCann. I'm sure he would do just fine at 3rd. Defensive minded catchers are all over the place. It wouldn't take long to pick one up or draft one.

The whole point is, is that he is too talented to let him get beat up night after night and watch his career get cut short.

Why would his career get cut short if he stays a catcher right now?

The Twins would be braindead to move him to 3B anytime soon which is why it won't happen.

There's no reason to move a 23 year old Gold Glove calibre hitting machine catcher to another position.

I just saw that after going 5-5 last night he raised his batting average to .389. That is just insane.

Mauer is a unique athletic specimen- heck, I'd say he's in better shape overall than virtually any other MLB catcher.

You have to realize that his knee injury was a result of running the bases. He's in excellent physical shape (how many ex-football All Americans are behind the plate?) and has a plus arm behind the plate.

Also, you maximize his offensive value behind the plate. Most teams take years to find some offensive production from their catchers. When you have a stud at catcher like Mauer, you keep him there.

yep the kid is amazing, no doubting it... plus the Twins drafted Matt Moses(SP) like 2 years ago... I thought he was their bigtime 3B prospect.

He can look to changing positions in about 10 years.

LMAO. Being fat like Molina doesn't help him. Dude has trouble moving around the catchers box and during those hot days when you're hot West in Anaheim or Texas, you will fatigue more easily. And crouching for 2-3 hours with a big frame will put a lot of stress on the knees.

Mauer is fine where he is. You don't put guys like him at DH. Dh is for if you have a surplus of fielders but need to get a good hitter up or for guys who are fat, slow, unathletic and can't play a lick of defense...David Ortiz and Frank Thomas (although he was a decent athlete having played TE at Auburn).

                    LOL @ this thread.

At catcher Mauer is a perennial All-Star in the making with HoF potential. At 3rd he's just another guy.

Exatly..... Not to mention he hasnt developed his power yet, and at 3B there are soooooooo many power guys out there, im not saying he would be a downgrade there but he just doesnt have the power. If I HAD to move him, I would put him in a corner OF spot. But I wouldnt even do that, let him catch, there are no signs of him breaking down yet, the Twins have been GREAT with him (giving him days off and putting him at DH). I am a die hard Yankee fan but I have favorite MLB players around baseball, Mauer is near the top of my list along with Gomes, Swisher, and Utley.

Mauer has continued his dominace today so far, he is 2 for 3 with a 2B and 2 runs scored. By the way he is playing DH today. (He is 11 of 13 so far in this series against the Dodgers).

Seriously though as awesome as that would be, it is good to see him do so well. Had he been a fringe player like Chris Weinke had been, I'd be upset he passed over FSU, but at least he is becoming an All Star.

Did you know that he and Weinke went to the same high school? Mauer is a freak, plain and simple. Keep him at catcher where he is a huge upgrade over the average replacement player. If he shows signs of breaking down because of the wear and tear you look for a different position.
